Description As the most of you know, Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII has been announced as a future DLC for SSB4. Not much is known about it yet, but after watching the Nintendo Direct at 12th November, I could imagine, that Cloud could share a rivalry with Ike. Hope you like it.

Β Mario: We have too many sword fighters in Smash.

Said the guy whose own characters take more than half the roster.

I think cloud is holding the buster sword the wrong way, pretty sure the edge is supposed to be facing away from him

Two comments;

1. I like what Jr. did back there

2. Ike, get ready for Corrin!

Don't worry, the other two DLC newcomers aren't BOTH swordfighters.

Well...one uses a sword, but mostly uses dragon limbs. The other could use swords, but opts for her guns.

Sheesh, now this is the swordfighter statistics as of now:

Link/Toon Link (Master Sword)
Prince Marth (Falchion)
Roy (Sword of Seals)
Ike (Ragnell)
Meta Knight (Galaxia)
Robin (Levin Sword)
Lucina (Parallel Falchion)
Shulk (Monado)
Cloud Strife (Buster Sword)
Mii Swordfighter (Sword)

...That's A LOT!Β

Add Corrin, and...that's 12 out of 58.

But...hey, swords are a common weapon in video games, moreso than stuff like hammers. This really isn't a big deal.

I was going to edit my comment to point out Corrin [Yato (Omega form)] but I guess the comment was too old to edit.

I never had a problem with the swordfighters myself honestly. I'm sick of so many characters now having counters as a default special move.Β

You're right. The counters are pure chaos. Even in the 3DS Version's initial/Pre-DLC launch, an entire row in the roster can be made out of fighters capable of counterattacks:

1.Marth
2.Ike
3.Little Mac
4.Greninja(Substitute is a Counterattack)
5.Palutena
6.Lucario(Double-Team is a Counterattack)
7.Shulk(Vision is a Counterattack)
8.Lucina
9.Mii Swordfighter

Yeah! It honestly made for a real pain while attempting to complete True All-Star Mode on Hard with ALL characters. If DLC characters were downloaded (adding one more character with a counterattack: Roy), they too would be added to the All-Star Mode's roster despite it being completely optional to clear any mode with any of the DLC characters. But at least with the version updates, the trade-off is that the roster as a whole suffers a higher damage ratio, even on Hard mode.Β

You forgot pit/dark pit. (Palutena's Bow/Sacred Blades/Silver Bow/Blades)

VideoGamerfrom20XX In reply to Townzelman2013 [2015-12-08 04:28:49 +0000 UTC]

They're more of "pseudo-swordfighters" to me. Under that logic, Ganondorf should be considered a "swordfighter" because of his "Warlock Blade" Custom Neutral Special, but he isn't considered one as that's the only instance of Ganondorf ever using his Sword of Sages outside of his taunt. As for Pit/Dark Pit specifically, you pretty much established their exclusion as "swordfighters" [Palutena's Bow (Pit) and Silver Bow (Dark Pit) are bows and whenever they can change into the Sacred Blades and Blades, respectively, they are just blades not swords]. The only swordfighter I excluded entirely is Young Link (Kokiri Sword), but that's only because he doesn't appear as a Smasher in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U (yet?).

Townzelman2013 In reply to VideoGamerfrom20XX [2015-12-09 16:13:51 +0000 UTC]

However you paint a picture over it their still swords so theirs no real difference there. Both their bows can split into duo swords that they can use at will for close range combat, and when they perform their standard A combo the duo swords become a duo sword staff that they can twirl around to land mutiple slashes on their victims. So their both sword bows, a combination of a bow & duo swords so technically they still count as swords.

VideoGamerfrom20XX In reply to Townzelman2013 [2015-12-10 05:47:36 +0000 UTC]

I suppose, although the Sacred Blades/Blades still don't have actual hilts, the thing of which separates blades from swords and in turn, separates dual wielders like Pit/Dark Pit from swordsmen from Link/Prince Marth and the rest. If you still classify Pit/Dark Pit as "swordfighters" I have nothing further to say on this matter as that's your preferred classification and I respect that.Β

VideoGamerfrom20XX In reply to DarkDiddyKong [2015-12-06 04:28:28 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty much on par with my personal complaint of too many characters having a counter in their default moveset (Oh no, I can't keep up with you, so I'm gonna use a move designed to nullify [in-]direct attacks and make an unearned KO, herp derp). I'd point out the reflector moves too, but that still isn't as practical nor as cheap as the abusable counters (fake out attacks and grabs seem the only way out of one, unless you use a counter move on a counterattack ).Β

But that's like 11 out of over 50 fighters.

VideoGamerfrom20XX In reply to PixelatedYoshi [2015-12-06 04:18:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's officially 11 out of now 56 characters (counting each DLC fighter and the three Mii classes as independent fighters). ALMOST 20% of the roster consist of swordfighter characters, but I just figured I'd point out the acknowledged swordfighters (with their sword's name) in the batch (Pit/Dark Pit are mistook often as swordfighters, even though it's obvious they aren't).
