Description We believed in our gods of steel and concrete, alas, they could not save us from our own delusion and our own greed. We tried to redefine our very own species using our vast knowledge of the laws of nature or merely the laws of what we called science, like physics, biology or chemistry. Yet, we failed horribly...

After the incident at Bay 7, long years ago, we did not consider the warnings that were so obvious. We continued to move on and little did we realize that our path was leading to destruction and ends tonight in that monstrous explosion. This cataclysmic fire will hopefully show us that we're not ready yet to continue, that our gods do not possess the strength and power of nature...

...not yet...

//

Well, it's been a while since my last deviation. And I guess I really needed that break to relax a little and "reload" my creativity. I didn't have and still don't have that much time either, so these were the reasons why you didn't hear from me for a little while.

//

If you actually want to know a little bit more about the "history" of that scene, please read on:

First I have to say that it is some kind of sequel to one of my earlier works, Machinae , which is mentioned as the incident at Bay 7. This is not meant to make up a dramatic story or something, it's just that the themes of the images are similar. Both show a world of Machines and human (?) technology and both end with disastrous events. In Machinae it was a rather invisible danger that threatened the people there. But now, there is a huge explosion, that is not only a threat to the people, but also to their "gods", the machines. Even they are destroyed by the fire, hence the title GΓΆtterdΓ€mmerung, which means "Twilight of the gods" in german. I just felt that the german word in this case is much more "powerful" (probably because it is shorter) than the english translation, that's why I used it as the title.

I have tried to capture the beginning of the explosion, or let's say how it looks like from above. I've tried to show the power of the explosion with the clouds that are visible in the upper right corner, showing how they burst off after breaking the walls of the building. But still, as I tried to visualize, seen from above, the whole scene looks rather calm, all the beatiful lights are still shining but the fire is coming...
Bear with me if that doesn't make any sense but it's actually the first time I tested myself on making something like that...both Machinae as well as Aengrod were merely scenes without a special "theme" that I wanted to visualize. Now I really had some moment in my mind and tried to achieve that - so, (almost) every feedback is more than welcome.

//

Technically speaking this image is far more advanced than the aforementioned scenes. It might not be visible but almost every aspect of my workflow has been improved. The scene consists of like 15,000 objects (I didn't count them exactly this time) yet it has only like 1,000,000 vertices (which means the meshes are far more efficient). Renderings weren't as critical as they were for Machinae and that's a good thing. Also, even though my texturing sucks, I improved a lot on applying and on using textures for many objects. So, my workflow was a lot faster.
Lighting was also improved using various passes that made it easier to make adjustments. I used the same method for the glow of the little lights and it did work out much smoother than it did before.

Wow, I applaude you if you actually read through all that...although it would make me happy if you did

Now I'd like to get some feedback - as stated above, (almost) everything is welcome! It took me a lot of time to make this, now you could spend a minute or so to let me know what you think, no?
Thanks in advance!

Haha, I totally know what you mean. And I honestly can't say that I wasn't inspired by that game (or that particular stage - the closing doors of that huge building...they were really cool). I never finished it myself (I probably could, but somehow I didn't have the motivation to do so at that time - right now, I'm rather playing Touhou than Ikaruga), though. It's a pity, such an awesome game.

Really is... I should go back to it at some point and try to accomplish beating it. Now that I can rotate my monitor and play and tate mode... would be worth it : D

The music is legendary @_@ I have the boss theme as my ringtone

And with Modern Warfare 2 coming out tomorrow, I doubt I'll go back to beat it anytime soon. Stuff like that requires dedication... so unforgiving.

I see. The only multiplayer games I play "seriously" are the Super Smash bros games, other than that I'm a "hardcore" single player...although, nowadays I don't have the time to.

Yeah, I generally ignore the multiplayer and stick to single-player only. I'm an RPG guy before I'm an FPS guy so it took me a lot to get into the original Modern Warfare but now it's just... so addictive. D:

there is a level of choatic beauty in this that i enjoy very much. everything is peaceful and sterile and then the eyes are drawn to a place of equal beauty and sterility but cataclysmic transformation. aesthetic in both visuals and concept.

your extensive detail is wondrous. i can't imagine what it would be like to fill the space as you do. it's an honor to have you as a friend.

i thoroughly enjoy how you use language here as well. from what i've seen over time there appears to be many german words that are succinct and far more potent than english. i would love to learn how it works.

as a suggestion perhaps you could try making things a little more reflective? i don't if the logistics of adding light glares to things would be monstrously overbearing though, so maybe not. lol

sorry i took so long to get to this. i've been a real pill lately.

i'm glad to see you continue to evolve as an artist. keep up your fantastic work.

I love artwork with a story, real or fictional. Your comments added a lot to this, in my opinion. The explosion looks great, as does the detailing on the titanic machinery and the contrast between the cool blue glowing bits and the uncontrollable red fire. Keep up the amazing work.

That means a lot to me. I like making up such little "stories" yet it is a little bit difficult for me as English isn't my natural language. And to hear that from someone who is very qualified to judge that ( sorry if I'm making fun of that, don't be mad at me), is really an honor!

Well, as this image is composited of more than only one render, the seperate renderings didn't take too long. Combined time is less than 10 hours, I guess.

The scene reminds me of the scene in hollow man, but in this scenario climbing the ladder would be pointless, because of the lack of oxygen. But anyway great image the detail is great, such as the glows and extrudes.

But one question; is the clouds a picture or blender made?

Haha, I remember when you showed me the WIP of this one... It's come quite some ways indeed and looking much better, eventhough I see you used some of the things we discussed and some not, it's all cool man, it's your piece after all...

Well, my thoughts, besides the "OMG THIS THING FRIGGIN ROCKS!!!!" And me being dazzled by the exquisite amount of detail you've put into it, the only things that I have to say is that basically the explosion doesn't look like how the description makes it sound it would... You know, it looks rather calm and peaceful, as if it's supposed to be there, as if the building was some huge furnace of sorts... And that explosion on the background it rather looks like some weird storm to me rather than being coming from the structure... A good way to add fury to explosions is just throw sparks and debris... That helps the thought of something being blownup... Here, as I said, it rather looks like those fires are supposed to be there...

But other than that, Myke, this piece is badass and detail galore as it is your usual work tends to be... And the eye candy more than makes up for what the explosions lack, so it's all cool!

Good stuff! Especially knowing that it was done in Blender...

I'd like to see a .blend file, or know what you did to create the amazing wealth of detail here! Very well done!

One thought, though: the story refers to the coming fires in a destructive fashion. The image as shown doesn't make it clear that the fires in the pit aren't supposed to be there: my first thought was that it was a furnace of some kind. If you were able to show some destruction around the fire, increasing as you get closer to it, this would make it very obvious that this was NOT supposed to happen!

Overall, this is a very detailed, very well-done image!!

Very nicely modeled, cool idea and a loong description
Crits: I, personally, dont really like how the magma and stuff makes everything look huge, while the items on the building walls look like they are pulled right out of a compter, which makes it look really small at the same time. Either way, thats just me. But also the explosion in the building further away looks kinda like its hovering =S
Great job as usual

The fires in that pit are a little weak, some more contrast to it would definately look better. I love the overall light work though. The red illumination coming from the pit, to the neons and docks. Not too sure bout the typo, but the overall piece is pretty darn awesome. Those minor issues are not stopping me from faving.
