Zuko StudyCirca Beg-Mid Season Two
Part of a set of sketches I'm making of Zuko, choosing him as a character in a project where I take a cartoon and redraw it in my own style.
There's a lot of Zuko's design that I like in Avatar; his build, his clothing, etc.
But I can't stand his scar. Honestly, it's not drawn like a blow like that should be. It's a friggin' third degree burn to the eye. Real intense. I've seen it drawn in fanart like it's a flame-ish tattoo, ugh.
Honestly, he's not that pretty. Really.
Okay. A little.
PS: Dedicated to Isaia. Check out her work. She shows how drawing fanart doesn't have to be all charries making out or stuff or lounging naked, etc. Woot.

Personally, I always liked the ugliness of the scar (this coming from a person that enjoys the hideous.) He looks too.. beautiful without it (Lake Loagai?) It's kinda like he has an ugly side.
But I love this drawing.. so cool. And I love the nose!

This is a refreshing break from the usual stylized renditions of Zuko's scar. Although I wouldn't be surprised if it might fade with time; taking into consideration the time that passed since his banishment and when he grew out the hair. Not to say the magnitude of the thing would be lessened. Just a thought. Otherwise I like it. But I will make an observation that the structure of the nose is a bit prominent -- if we take into account that Zuko's background (fitting with the overall style of Avatar) is a parallel of the East Asian in general.
But with that said I'd like to see more. A good introductory piece if you plan to make a series out of this sketch.

Yeah, the scare reminds me (and I hate being cliche) of the deformity the Phantom had in Phantom of the Opera. It's macabre, but it's a bit refreshing from tattoo like scar. I imagine in real life Zuko's scar would be quite gruesome.

Haha nice point about the scar. *Looks back at random sketches of Zuko in my sketchbook that have flame like scars* O_o I didn't really think much about that. Anyways, I really like the sketchiness of this, and you did a great job on the hair and scar. I wish I could sketch like this
