Description This was actually a lot more fun than I thought it'd be. First time I saw all the armor I was like. "omgosh.. so much detail D:" but I worked in layers, which make it pretty easy. She was a completely naked form to begin with, then I added her under-armor, and then I erased stuff and added the over-armor. I actually have like 3 or 4 versions of this sketch now in between the different stages of her armor. It'd prolly make a good character reference timeline of sorts XD Anyways, this is Freija who is (c) Copyright ~dernwine

I really love the expression and the details in her clothing and such
If you don't mind me pointing it out, there's one thing about her that seems just a little off- the angle of her upper torso. With the deep curve of her back, I think her chest area would be viewed from a lower angle, making it point more upward and her breasts appear a bit higher on her torso (even if she has a large bust). I think this reference illustrates what I'm trying to get at. [link] Her far breast would appear higher because it's farther away from the viewer.
Also I think the face placement might be heightening the effect- since the shoulder normally obscures the chin. But of course we often want to show faces in our drawings, so sometimes anatomy just has to take a step to the side! lol
Haha, sorry I know you weren't requesting an indepth critique or anything, and I realize this piece may not be something you feel needs this kind of correction, but I thought I'd offer my viewpoint in case it is helpful!

The face is very captivating. You drew the dramatic angling of her body so well, something that I couldn't pull off very well ;w;
Though you can't see much of the shoulder pieces, they are still well drawn!
To my Favourites, this goes!

love the face, but she really has no real "Armor" to speak of, well then again i consider armor to be this [link]

dernwine In reply to Kagsacar [2011-08-31 05:35:25 +0000 UTC]

I'll happily field this since I designed the armour: Her armour is basically a modified combination of Roman, Viking and Norman gear. It's designed along the lines of Heavy Line Infantry armed with tower/kite shields, so actually her armour doesn't NEED to be that heavy. In close combat it's fairly hard to strike at legs, and if you've got a long shield and a friend either side they're really well protected anyway; most dangerous blows in that situation are directed at head and shoulders and arms, hence the concentration of armour on those points.

Diatribe mode off.

Ah ok, like i said my idea of armor is tainted by super heavy armor, so i can see why putting armor on the points that would be open, instead of everywhere makes sense.

dernwine In reply to Kagsacar [2011-08-31 15:05:18 +0000 UTC]

XD. It's all about thinking what you're going to need the armour for. Full plate generally developed for mounted troops where the fighting is much more chaotic and a blow could come from any direction (or from down low if you're fighting infantry). Even then it's not as heavy or bulky as 'modern' interpretations tend to think. Compare this [link] to the Warhammer armour. Plate really tends to be no thicker than 14 or 12 gauge steel(that's 0.07-0.1 inches or about 1-2mm), which is important because the wearer can, well, move.
Stop me if I'm getting boring, I have a degree in this, and absolutely love to explain this stuff.

a degree in medieval armor?

dernwine In reply to Kagsacar [2011-08-31 23:45:57 +0000 UTC]

Well really it's a degree in Archaeology, specializing in Migration and Medieval period archaeology, and then I wrote my dissertation in the field of Medieval Arms and Armour. I also spent three years in a Norman Re-enactment group.
ah the days...
