Seriously, 'Black Lightning'? Quite an original name there. And while we're on the subject, apparently Electro is the villain in the Amazing Spider man 2 movie... oh, and he's played by Jamie Foxx. Personally wouldn't be my choice for the role, but there you go. Perhaps their turning Electro into more of a lame goofball character?! Who knows.Related content

At the time he was created, for DC to have a Black superhero at all among all the White human heroes and White extraterrestrial heroes, especially a Black who was not a rip-off of Blaxploitation flicks, was both unusual and (for the time) brave, so the name fits.
He has since been retconned to have black-shaded lightning bolts to explain his name.

Black characters always have electric powers. I have a theory that the electricity adds a good positive space to the negative space of their dark skin and almost always looks pretty nice.

Awesome, I agree.. such a terrible name. Then again the majority of DC's characters have terrible names. Just look at the big three.
Until Marvel gets the rights back to Spider-man it's just going to be meh. Even the reboot was bad, just not AS bad as the first series.
