Description A centaur giving a damsel a ride in the woods. Accompanies my poem:  The balad of the Last Centaur
The Ballad of the Last Centaur
I looked to the stars but I never could trace
What on earth had become of the rest of my race
I concluded that I was the last of my line
With the trunk of a man and the rest equestrine.
Two hearts beat within me, below and above
In a solitary thing with no other to love,
so I kept to myself in the wood's dappled shade
and I hunted alone with my bow and my blade.
One day there came a sound, the coarse voices of men
who had come to the wild, passing close to my den;
And a hostage they had- the fair child of a lord-
Whom they'd taken, forsooth, to demand some reward.
And it troubled me much when I heard their chief say
what they would do to her, should her father not pay,
And the next thing I knew my straight arrow was flying-
The brute was unhorsed and down in the dirt dying;
I seized then my chance and at them I was rushing
Somehow wielding a branch, skulls and helmets for crushing.
My crude cudgel whirled, and my front hooves they flailed
kicking and wind

That's one ride I would rather have that a car, ever. Eco-friendly, friendly to me (I hope), and certainly more attractive to me than a car.

It's certainly a green mode of transport.

Are you gonna paint this? Is so beautiful it makes me want to paint it in Photoshop. <.< It's really beautiful, even though like someone else said, the relationship is not so practical or convenient, but it's still beautiful.

You're welcome to do that. I might do an oil painting on a similar theme. I'm in the mood to do something romanitc and fantastical after revisiting the Waterhouse exhibition (not that he did any centaurs). The relationship could be more problematic. Not as tricky as the mermaid problem, or what to do with a bird-bodied siren!

Ah nice! ^.^ A Waterhouse's exhibition must be very inspiring indeed. And I think I thought of this drawing with similar colors to the ones he often used. So, you let me try it? It would be wonderful, I love your lines, and it might help me practice my use of colors.

Lol XD right, those are way trickier.

Very pretty piece! I like it!
Great setup as far as characters, and background! It feels Narnian to me.

I was a bit inspired by the centaurs created by Weta Workshops for the Narnia films. Quite like the idea of the slightly horsie faces.

This is really nice! It'd be really nice, I think, if you show her other hand on the centaur's shoulder. It's not a big deal, but I think it'd add a little more to it. Just an idea. I like the overall feel to it. Good job!~Jenn

I thought about that and it featured in the initial sketch, but seemed too toughie feelie. Just holding one hand seems more decorous.

Tell me, you seem to have a penchant for the damnsel in distress theme, particularly when it involves the "immaculate female" type C:

Also this one reminds me of "Athena and Centaur" alot. He's got the same pose and expression. Was that a conscious refference, or just coincidence?

dashinvaine In reply to Kansheera [2009-08-24 19:20:31 +0000 UTC]

If you mean the Botticelli, it wasn't consciously referenced. I'd forgotten about that painting until just now when I looked it up. I don't see it as that similar. She's not dwarfing him, and isn't carrying a huge axe.

I would usually try to offer some constructive criticism, but I just can't find anything in this that could be improved. I'm glad you left this as a sketch rather than colouring it, I think you would have lost the delicacy of the piece.
