Description
The need for hulls in the post-October War Royal Navy led to the Amphion-class having their lives extended. These boats were primarily deployed in the Mediterranean, leaving the more capable Oberon and Porpoise-classes to be employed elsewhere.
HMS Acheron would see action off Cyprus, attacking ex-Greek and Turkish ships being used by terrorist group Red Dawn to storm the island. Her sister HMS Amphion would be the first Royal Navy submarine lost to enemy action since World War II when she was sunk by a nuclear mine; while HMS Alliance would have the twin honours of sinking Red Dawn-aligned French destroyers off Corsica and capturing the ex-Turkish destroyer Maresal Fevzi Cakmak.
