Description Fifteen ex-US Navy Fletcher-class destroyers were transferred to the Royal Navy as part of the 1963 US-UK Mutual Defence Agreement, with all being converted to Royal Navy standards. Once in shipyard hands, the old ships' superstructures and funnels were almost completely cut away and replaced with prefabricated structures. The main radar and ESM equipment was carried on tall latticework masts that surrounded two inelegent exhaust flues in lieu of funnels.
Despite their ungainly appearances, these ships were very capable and much-loved by their crews, remaining in service for over 20 years before being replaced with the newer Type 22 large frigate design in the 1980s.

Sea Lance is basically a typically British kludge, from the people that IRL turned Martel into Sea Eagle and originally planned for ALARM to use the same airframe as Sky Flash. Basically it's an RIM-24 Tartar airframe fitted with a slower-burning rocket motor, 500lb semi-armour piercing warhead, radar altimeter and an active radar seeker based on work done for the Red Dean AAM. No Sea-skimming capability since this was designed in the 60s, and the seeker's not the most accurate but it's still good enough to pick up ships.

I know what you mean re: some of this backstory not being especially comfortable, but I'm working off what the original author came up with. I'm not convinced he knows exactly how any of the plot threads he's set up will end, or in fact whether he remembers them all, so I'm kinda grasping a bit as to why the CIA have it in for the UK.
