Description
The oldest of the Royal Navy's frigates, having been converted from World War II Wartime Emergency Design Utility destroyers, the Type 15 was retained in service post-October War. Unlike its sisters, the Type 16, the class was determined to be worth upgrading for further service.
The upgrade was mainly restricted to weaponry, removing the obsolete twin 4-inch gun aft of the funnel and replacing it with a 3-inch Mark 6 twin turret on the bow. To accommodate the 3-inch magazine, storage and accommodation previously located in the fo'c'sle was moved to the old 4-inch mag. A quadruple 21-inch torpedo launcher was fitted over the plated-off gun turret housing, capable of launching the Mark VIII unguided 21-inch torpedo or a Mark 20 18-inch homing torpedo with a 1.5-inch thick sabot. Anti-aircraft weaponry consisted of a single triple Sea Cat launcher, two 20mm Oerlikon cannon and the 3-inch guns.
Their main role was, as always, anti-submarine warfare, however. For this the type featured a comprehensively upgraded sonar suite, two three-barrel Squid depth charge mortars and the torpedo tubes. The post-WWIII upgrade added a landing pad on the stern that was capable of accommodating a Wasp helicopter, but there was insufficient space for a hangar. The upgrade gave the Type 15 an extra 10-15 years of service life and these ships were still run until their machinery wore out.
