Description
The four Type 61's were also upgraded, intended to act as radar pickets for convoy escort duties. Upgrades involved replacing the original AKE-1 antenna for the Type 965 radar with the AKE-2 "double bedstead", Type 982M aircraft direction radar and introducing a quad-Sea Cat launcher.
Although useful in providing early warning of air attack to convoys, the ships were made obsolete by the advent of AEW aircraft. Their service was limited and all four would be donated to the Free French Navy by the early 1970s.
