Description
Delivered during the 1950s, the F-86D and F provided the main combat capability of the Republic of Korea Air Force at the outbreak of the Second Korean War in July 1964. Problems encountered during the first North Korean advance included reliability with the AIM-9B Sidewinders then in use, plus the F-86D night fighter's lack of an internal gun and the uselessness of the internal rocket pack in close-in combat. By August 1964, the US Navy had transferred a stock of more capable AIM-9D missiles from NAS Atsugi in Japan and the ability of the ROKAF pilots to fight back improved.
As the war settled into a stalemate while the South Korean and US forces rearmed, the F-86F was re-roled into the fighter-bomber role. The type was operated alongside the F-5A and F-104G in the counter-offensive of 1965, remaining to guard the country when ROKAF forces were later deployed to South Vietnam. The Sabre was phased out by 1968, having been replaced by faster, more modern types.
