Description Starfighters intended for export to NATO had been sat in storage at Burbank since the October War. While some had been sent to Taiwan, the F-104G would be the first third-generation fighter delivered to South Korea. Sixty of the type were delivered from the middle of 1964 and provided top-cover for the US-South Korean counteroffensive in 1965. Later in that year, thirty were sent to South Vietnam to reinforce that country's conflict against its communist neighbour to the north.
While the Starfighter fared well against the North Korean forces, it fared less well against better trained Vietnamese air crews. Of the thirty deployed, ten were shot down and six more crashed in landing accidents - a loss rate of over 50%.
The F-104's service with Korea was relatively brief. After the fall of Saigon in December 1965, the Korean Starfighters were flown home and remained in service until 1969, when they were donated to Taiwan after their replacement by the F-4 Phantom.
