Description As part of their donations of equipment to the German National Self-Defence Force (Deutschland Nationale Selbstverteidigungstruppe), the Swedish government refurbished forty first-generation Drakens for the re-established Luftwaffe. Thirty J 35A interceptors and ten Sk 35C trainers, all retaining the original RM 6B engine with its short afterburner, were selected for conversion in 1967.
Known to the Swedes as the J 35T (for "Teutonic"), the conversion replaced the J 35A's PS-02/A radar (an Ericsson-built Thomson-CSF Cyrano S6) with the Ferranti AI-23 AIRPASS I monopulse set and its associated head-up display/gunsight. Provision was made for up to four Rb 09 air-to-air missiles (a Bofors-built HSD Firestreak) under the wings and the two Aden 30mm revolver cannon were retained.
Unlike the original Sk 35C, the Sk 35T was combat-capable and had the same AI-23 radar and Rb 09 missile capability. However, cannon were deleted to make room for equipment displaced by the rear seat.
Tasked solely with air defence, as part of the deal with the USSR to limit any German weaponry to "defensive" weapons only, the Draken would police Germany's skies for twenty years until it was replaced by newer, more capable aircraft in the late-1980s.
