Description Here is a new painting of the wild cattle of Chillingham, in Northumbria, based on a photo I took a few years ago. Neopastels on Pastelmat paper. It's about 12x10 inches.

This herd of cattle is, I believe, unique in the world. They are virtually wild, as they have lived on an huge isolated country estate for 700 years, with minimal human contact. They are apparently the closest thing we have in the world to the pre-domesticated cattle. We had to walk for half an hour (with a 3-wheel baby buggy!) down a very rough track to get them, and were very lucky that this couple came right up to the perimeter fence to see us.

Thanks - well, that's what we're trying to promote. I reckon that the more people see that quality art can be made with oil pastels, the more people will realise that it is a lot more than a "childrens" medium. I can't even get any decent oil pastels in the UK, but have to have them mailed over from Germany... but it's well worth it!

I get mine from www.greatart.co.uk. It claims to be the UK's biggest art material retailer, but the products ship from their warehouse in Germany...

They're the only good supplier I can find that sells Sennelier and Neopastel oil pastels, and also the acrylic paints which I like (Cryla).

I gave my cheapest oil pastels to my kids, however, and they love them! Much better than wax crayons...

I'm planning to try heating some soon, but I've no idea what will happen!

They do benefit from the slight heating of holding in your hand, or using on a hot summer day, so I'm sure the effect will be great...
