Description FFA = Forgotten Females of Animation

Clutch Cargo has retained a certain amount of notoriety, over 50 years after its television run, for its unusual approach to ultra-low-budget animation: synchronizing film of live-action lips over animation cels.

But even die-hard fans of cheesy cartoons overlook another animated series that utilized that technique (patented under the name of "Synchro-Vox"), and produced by the same company that gave us Clutch Cargo.

Premiering in 1962, Space Angel chronicled the exploits of Scott McCloud, astronaut and agent of the EBI (Earth Investigation Bureau) as he and the crew of the spaceship Starduster, Taurus (navigation and weapons) and Crystal (communications) investigate interstellar mysteries and battle galactic bad guys.

Of course, our focus here is on Crystal, daughter of Professor Mace (head of the EBI) and possibly Scott's love interest (though this wasn't played up very prominently). Designed by the legendary Alex Toth, in his first foray into TV animation design, Crystal cuts a very comely figure in a form-fitting spacesuit.

Well done!Β  She'd be a great subject for a resin figure, too.

Aside from my second grade science teacher, Crystal was an early wet dream.

This was my first favorite television Sci Fi show. As you note the animation is weak, but the illustrations used are wonderful. I have never been able to find out who did the original graphics. Classic Sci Fi. I was too young to appreciate Crystal's depiction back then. Thanks!

Ah cool. For some reason she reminds me a bit of someone that Gerry Anderson would make as a puppet...dunno why.

Yes, I remember her!

Clutch Cargo, Space Angel and don't ever forget The Captain Fathom, They were the first ever "motion comics", and were aired on TV . Today, many fans of motion comics has no any idea about those low budget adventure cartoons, they are the real Motion Comics!

Cheers! and Two thumbs up!

Thank you for reminding me of Crystal's name. I watched Space Angel frequently. Yeah, the animation mostly consisted of a series of non-moving panels, with someone's lips sticking through them in close-ups. (Like the live-action space shows and the marionettes in other programs were anymore complicated.) But until Star Trek came along, Space Angel was the best space opera around.

Clutch Cargo? Wasn't that a solid-state truck-driving arcade game from the 1970s?

Seriously, though, I saw one episode back around 1980 or so... wasn't impressed. Never saw Space Angel...

But you did a fine job with this character. Lips don't look that photo-realistic, though.

Oh, I was tempted to photograph Janet's lips and paste them into the pic, but didn't want to take that much time with it.

Alex Toth...I think I saw that name before?

Did he create Space Ghost?

Toth created or designed most of Hanna-Barbera's superhero series of the late 1960's, including Space Ghost, the Herculoids, Mightor, Birdman, the Galaxy Trio et al - he was incredibly prolific during this period.

Excellent! I'm still a fan of Space Angel. Syncro-Vox and all! Sadly today's so-called fans of animation seem ONLY to accept CGI and other modern-style animation. They have no interest in what came before and paved the way for PIXAR, Japanese anime, etc.

I've only witnessed one of these shows from a brief clip show in Pulp Fiction. My folks remember Clutch Cargo and were not big fans of it.

That said, your rendition of Crystal is outstanding. I never knew that Alex Toth had his hand on her creation. Thanks for posting an outstanding pin-up of this forgotten heroine of animation yesteryear.

Clutch Cargo and Space Angel may be the only non-comedy shows in existence to use Synchro-Vox. Not that it's hard to see why no one else bothered.
