Description

They don’t call dogs Man’s Best Friend for nothing. Especially in the world of animation. While I’m equal towards dogs and cats in real life, I can’t deny that there have been plenty of amazing animated dogs over the years, and with the upcoming crossover featuring the two iconic scaredy dogs just around the corner, I feel that now is more appropriate than ever to make a list of my top ten personal favourite cartoon dogs!

My Top 10 Favourite Cartoon Dogs

10.) Astro: He’s the original nuclear family dog and also possibly the one who started Ruh-Roh from Scooby-Doo.

9.) Santa’s Little Helper: A rather heartwarming tale of a racing dog who gets abandoned by his owner and adopted by the Simpsons. Homer and the clan have shown varying degrees of love towards him. He’s often neglected and even has found new owners through the series run. Nevertheless, he always finds a way back into the arms of his family.

8.) Dino: Believe me, he IS a dog. He may be a dinosaur, but he still acts very much like a dog. That being said, I really do love Dino. His affection for Fred is so cute.

7.) Droopy: He may seem a slow and lazy dog, but he outsmarts his enemies with his wit. Droopy is a very serious kind of dog, but like other animated dogs, he is adorable and can make you laugh and impress you with his intelligence at the same time. Droopy's quiet nature and funny sense of humour make him one of the best animated dogs.

6.) Odie: I just had to include this lovable dog. Odie may be constantly called an idiot (By Garfield) but he may well just be the smartest character in the comic strip.

5.) Pluto: Mickey’s iconic companion. In a world where animals walk, talk, have jobs and can drive, Pluto sure did draw the short stick. He can’t do any of those things and his owner is a mouse that is larger than him. Pluto never complains however. He has found love and has proven to be a very loyal pal to Mickey and even the rest of the Sensational Six.

4.) Seymour Asses: Aside from having the greatest name in history, this dog falls more on the sadder side of this list. I will say this; no cartoon has ever made me cry except this one. That ending to Jurassic Bark made me burst into tears. Seymour looks so damn adorable (I always have a soft spot for dogs that look like they have mustaches), and his loyalty to Fry is what keeps him so high on my list. Go on, I dare you to watch this episode without crying.

3.) Goofy: Originally, my list wasn’t going to consist of anthropomorphic dogs but it was proven to be very difficult. Since Goofy is possibly my favourite Disney character of all time, I decided to give up and just add him. Goofy is as charming as he could ever be, from his clumsiness to his lovable self. He’s a great father to his son, Max, and a great friend to Mickey and Donald. Honestly, I’m glad he’s on this list.

2.) Courage the Cowardly Dog: Coming in at a close second is my boy, Courage. While the show was a perfect horror comedy, scarring many kids – as well as myself – with its nightmare fuel, the heart of the show has always been Courage. Despite his name, Courage is actually not cowardly at all. The monsters he deals with are understandably terrifying, and the fact he has to deal with them almost every single day shows that he’s a lot braver than people give him credit for. However, his reactions are what earn him the name and they are always priceless. His over-the-top screams are funny to watch and his love for his owner is so heartwarming. He is also one of the two dogs in this list with a very tragic backstory.

1.) Scooby-Doo: Of course, my number one favourite cartoon dog of all time is none other than Scooby-Doo. Scooby is the type of dog I want in my life. Loyal, always there for you, can be as scared as you but always saves you in the end. I love the way he talks and he is so adorable too. He may be a coward when it comes to the monsters he, Shaggy and the gang have to deal with, but that’s why we love him so much. It makes you want to get in there, hug the Great Dane and share a Scooby-Snack with him.

So that’s my list of my favourite cartoon dogs! Do you agree with me? Who are your top ten favourite cartoon dogs?
