It's a choice only you can make. Depends on whether you want to show the real thing or a nice picture, I guess.

Quite understandable. But the situation would have been just as real a couple of days earlier or later without the crane, though with another boat, another light, another sky. etc. etc. And you might not have been there to take the photo 
I think you can decide either way. I tend to only 'improve' my photos by playing a little with the lights, contrast, saturation, while keeping all elements in there as they were. Not completely real, but then, a photo never is as you see it in real life. Just in a few cases I try to delete an element I do not want.
Anyway: all choices are acceptable, as long as you do not try to really fool people by suggesting something is as it was in reality, while that's not the case; that's my opinion.

It's surley not easy to pass the Grande Canale on a "rush hour" in summer, but this picture was taken in the calm of winter ^^
