Description Cardiff Castle's Norman keep sits atop the motte of the older wooden castle that was here. While most of the medieval castle, like the Tower of London, was 'repaired' as a 1800s version of a medieval castle (that is to say, a fake one), the keep was more or less untainted. A Roman fort stood at this site until the 4th century AD and the current castle began here in the 1060s shortly after William the Bastard, er, Conqueror by this point, decided being king of England and Wales was cooler than just being king of England. (And yes, before conquering he really was known as William the Bastard.)

Cardiff: More than just a backdrop for Dr. Who!
