The Japan National Railways D51-class were 2-8-2 steam locomotives designed by Hideo Shima (later involved with the first bullet train) for freight service. More than 170 have been preserved and are on display around the country as well as Taiwan (the Japanese colony of Formosa) and Russia (Soviet Railways, captured after World War II). They were also used in Korea when it was a colony.

When I visited this engine would back away from the museum down the track, then barrel forward to the museum and repeat the process for several hours. If you didn't ride their other steam engine, you could at least see one in action. If you have the patience, you can get a shot of this train moving forward as a Shinkansen (bullet train) flies by the opposite direction on the raised track in the background.
