Description

A 12 cm K 370 (b)- A captured Belgian field gun pressed into Wehrmacht service during the German occupation mounted at Battery Saltzwedel Neu, the World War II battery near Oostende, Belgium and now the Atlantic Wall Museum. The hand-painted sign in the background was a nice touch.

It was cool visiting this place on such an overcast day because it made me think of D-Day. To think of what it would have been like at such a place while thousands of troops came rushing at it.

The Openluchtmuseum Atlantikwall (Atlantic Wall Open Air Museum) has two kilometers of preserved Atlantic Wall trenches, bunkers and tunnels complete with restored emplacements and weapons. Saved as a national monument by Prince Charles, who owned the property. It has preserved German emplacements from both World Wars.

In the US from the late 1930s on, we did the same thing with old French 155 mm  guns left over from WWI. They were called "Panama Mounts" because they were first used to defend the Panama Canal Zone.

I've a picture of one of those old 155s in here. In the Philippines they were the biggest piece of artillery the Americans had. (And a pain to move around.)
