Your colors control the eye and attract the to the forms you have created. I am still astonished by your work but I am learning here too. Hmmm

Hey big Dave! I love this character and remember her from some of your earlier works. I like the works that feature her primarily as they're always really imaginative!

Im a painting fool man! Just got back from my LosAngeles show [link] and did some serious gallery hopping. Saw all the lowbrow/juxtapoz stars work live and in person which was pretty life changing. Just about Everyone paints with oils on gesso board out there-so I went out and bought like $200 in oils..I dunno how to use em yet but its worth a try-The density/depth of color with oils blows acrylics away--but the drying time will be a weird issue/problem possibly..

Thinkspace is such a cool name for a gallery...
I was working with water-based oils starting in 2001, but the drying time was KILLING me-- I'd always hated the dullness of the colors of Liquitex acrylics, but finally started working with Golden brand acrylics a little more than a year ago, and I love those colors, love the drying time... but these days, I keep thinking I should go back to gouache!!!
Dave, have you gotten to see much of Hi-Fructose magazine? [link] I actually prefer it to Jux...

davidmacdowell In reply to SRaffa [2009-03-19 22:37:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah-Thinkspace is courting Hi-Fructose to get me in there eventually-Theres just so many great names and theyre generally pretty new-but yeah-totally agree. I still dig em both though.. I like that HF is geared more toward the traditional art-as Jux is kinda taking the direction of street art-more so-me thinks..I understand that alot of the Jux people jumped ship and swam over to HF also-so its becoming more powerfull a force as we speak..Yeah-I bought the water-based oils-and some solvent that "improves/speeds up" drying time-I dont know how fast-but its worth a try..Im pretty much a Liquidex man-but if your magic is made with Golden-than you dont need to sell me on it-your work is the perfect spokesman. Sometimes I spray gloss over a finished acrylic and it helps deepen the color-but I it makes it impossible to photograph afterwards etc..

How's your time management working out? Have you found a way to integrate all this with your regular life?

davidmacdowell In reply to SRaffa [2009-03-20 23:03:29 +0000 UTC]

no regular life here brother-but then again life has never been all that normal-and Ive spent about %90 of it bored so-hey..at least theres no time to be bored-haaaaa!!!! Im working on 2 commissions now and have 2 show deadlines at the end of March-I could go on about whats expected of me but I should have some time mid april to play with them oils which im really excited about..You? Hows your schedule? I remeber whenever I quieried about your gallery activity you always said that your pace was slow..Man you could blow up the lowbrow art scene if you wanted to-thats a natural fact..

I'll tell you something stupid, man-- I've got less time for everything now than I did before I quit my full-time job! I'm at a loss to explain it...
Whatever your schedule is, it's clearly agreeing with you-- your work is shining full out beautifully...

Thanks man-That means alot. Its probably looking good just because its a constant thing-painting at least 8hrs a day-every day since last July?maybe..weird..I did take 2 days off in oct because of a mini vacation but suffered because I couldnt take my mind off the work etc..
