The most powerful enemy the Mane Six have ever faced... who they defeated before he could turn his power on Equestria and turn the world to shadow, and turned him back into Stygian. If that's why fans complained that "Shadow Play Pt. 2" was anticlimactic, did they want to see the high probability that the Pony of Shadows would win if he ever did direct battle with the Mane Six and the Pillars (without the Elements, of course)? I dunno. I liked the Season 7 finale and the idea that they are faced with an enemy that is too powerful to fight directly. The fact they had twelve Element-bearers trying to send him to limbo *while* the Pony of Shadows still fought back to escape is telling enough of his dark power. He also has the most monstrous design of all the enemies of MLP. One question still remains: in the Hollow Shades, where Stygian became the Pony of Shadows, where did this shadowy power come from? We may never know.
