This is brilliant, David. The way you used Mondrian's composition and adapted it to the comic art is great. my fave cover from your gallery so far

Love the Mondrian inspired design. The flat colours and the framework work so well with the theme of comics and the team aspect of the series.
You have an amazing sense and talent for design styles and what you can adopt for your covers, truly!

davidyardin In reply to Phandagart [2012-06-12 03:08:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I don't think my design sense is that strong though; it seems to come a lot easier to a lot of other artists I admire.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phandagart In reply to davidyardin [2012-06-12 10:45:50 +0000 UTC]

Are you kidding me, "not that strong"?
Besides, having it come easy is not the point or a criterium. It's the result AND the process that count and the more laborious and tough on the artist the process, the better. Think Picasso, that dude isn't the most famous painter because he was enjoying the joie de vivre and creating amazing art in his sleep.

David, Would you mind sharing your experience of how you broke into comics?
And possibly some of your favorite tools of the trade when doing sequintials?
Thanks so much.

That's kinda a long story and I'm on deadline at the moment... I'm sure I've answered that in an interview somewhere online.

Tools I use are listed on my deviantART homepage under interests. You can also see me using them on my youtube: [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

davidyardin In reply to Tazio-Bettin [2012-06-11 14:35:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, it can't be that original if it's influenced by another artist's work, but thanks all the same.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tazio-Bettin In reply to davidyardin [2012-06-11 14:43:42 +0000 UTC]

Well so what, if you make use of dramatic lights, one could say 'caravaggio did that already'. Every artist uses a language, or mixes several languages like you did here. That's where creativity goes. You basically reinvented a language and codified it into a new context. What more can one do? It's not just an awesome technique, like it happens for most comics covers. It also shows a deeper level, and I find that admirable.
