Description This is the lineart for the first of my regular X-Factor covers, which will be out in February 2009. While I'm more than happy I've got the gig , I'm a bit bummed I get the stories spoiled for me now , as X-Factor is one of my favourite reads .

Anyway I did a few layouts for this cover, and of course editorial picked my least favourite , so this one took me a while to do, and only came along with much kicking and screaming. I do like that this cover is story related though.

Solicitations info is below:

X-FACTOR #40
Written by PETER DAVID
Penciled by VALENTINE DE LANDRO
Cover by DAVID YARDIN

“SLINGS AND ARROWS”
You remember John Maddox, right? He’s the one dupe that Jaime Madrox never reabsorbed. Family man. Pastor. All around decent guy. Well, he’s having a really really BAD day. And things are going to get worse when an armed Madrox comes knocking on his door. He’s looking for answers that only a man of the lord can provide and if Madrox doesn’t like what he hears, it may very well be the last sermon that John Maddox ever delivers…
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

Pencils and inks by me.

Thanks Daniel. As I said above I did use photo reference for some of those things.

man you really got the emotions down on this one. do you photo reference alot?

davidyardin In reply to dio-03 [2008-11-18 22:38:21 +0000 UTC]

I use reference when I need it, but not so much for the emotion on Jamie's face. I used it here more for tightening my foreshortening and some of the clothing/shadows.

I'm really digging the inking on this cover David. Great mix of traditional hardline comic-style inks with hatching and dry brush and other textural markings. It's a .

X-Factor is a great book and one of my favorite reads. It's awesome that you got the gig, congrats. The cover looks fantastic, I like the expression on Jamie. He kind of looks strung out, on the verge of losing it. The candles on the table must have been horrible to do (a pain in the ass), but you nailed it.

Thanks. The candles were actually the easy part, but yes Jamie is in a very dark place emotionally this issue.

well great job man, I can't wait to check out the issue. Plus imo it's a huge up grade over the last couple of covers

ah..isn't that how it always works? you send your editor 3-4 layouts...and you decide "I'm gonna do one more so my editor don't think I'm slacking" and you like it the least...but its the one they choose..heh. Anyways great cover man!! digging the dry brush effects!

Cheers Francis. I have another cover I'm doing at the moment which I'm doing layout, after layout. after layout. I wished they'd picked one of the earlier versions, but hopefully I'll nail it this morning.

yeah good luck man! I hate having to redo layout after layout. Sometimes I just feel like I can't think of any new ways to draw the same thing...

When Whilce was training me in the Philippines, one of the exercises he made me do was to try and draw 5 completely different layouts for each sequential page I was working on. It was hard, and I'd often hit roadblocks, but it really was a beneficial problem solving exercise.

It's a bit harder to enjoy doing multiple layouts though when you've got several dealines looming.
