Oh yea that most epic picture of Goro, this one is legendary. This was Mortal Kombat at its most awesomness.

Hello! I'm surprised to see it here, found it searching info for an article about MK. May I ask if you did anything else for Midway and MK at that time? Like the skull on Scorpion's fatality? Watching the original footage, it seems to be a sculpture fixed on a stick or something.
PS: would you mind answering a few more questions about this subject for my website? If yes, please let me know. Thank you.

Hi L3M35:
Yes, I did, but not Scorpion's skull. I created the stop motion animation model of the character, Kintaro for "Mortal Kombat II"; the stop motion animation models of the characters, Precious Leglock and Judge Death, as well as the prosthetic make-up and fiberglass shoulder guards for Judge Dredd on "Judge Dredd".
And yes, I'd be pleased to answer any question for your website. I don't visit this site much anymore, so the best way to contact me is through my e-mail address: CurtsArt@gmail.com. Until next time, take care.

Now that explains why Goro always looked so 'plastic' in the early photos- he was a model!
Did you have any input on bringing him to life for the movie?

DaVinci41 In reply to ogrebear [2011-08-07 22:59:40 +0000 UTC]
I disagree: nothing quite beats real light falling on real physical objects. I would say that this factor contributed greatly to Goro's realism and appeal.
Unfortunately, I had no input on the Amalgamated Dynamics animatronic puppet used in the filmed version. The film version varied markedly from John Tobias' original design (observe the orientation of the arms and where they insert into the torso, for instance).
Thank you once again for your comments!

I used to play this on my Sega Game Gear all the time when I was younger. I think I only ever got to Goro maybe once or twice. The Mortal Kombat franchise is still my favourite of all the fighting games.

Hi:
Thanks for stopping by to post your comments. Although I wasn't responsible for programming Goro, I am gratified to see that he is remembered so fondly by so many people. He was great fun to create. In a way, hearing from fans like yourself prolongs the joy of the original creation! Many thanks!

You have no idea how many times I've seen this render of Goro in the game! It's great to see the originals, as well as gettingall sorts of tidbits of interesting information during the creative process! Well played good sir, well played! ^_^

Funny how John "Top Hollywood Talent" Tobias is nowhere to be seen these days and Ed Boon just unveiled the highly anticipated MK vs DC. Studio Gigante flopped(what's "Studio Gigante?) and from what I hear, Midway is still doing great. Karma is quite the nasty lady.

Yes she is. You might be blindsided and take the hit for stuff like this initially, but bad karma has a way of amplifying by several magnitudes by the time it travels back to hit the original perpetrator. Take care.

I know that John Tobias and Ed Boon are considered the true daddies of mortal kombat...... BUT without your Goro and Kintaro.... it's just another fighter. People wanted to see the gore.. sure. Me... well, I also wanted to see Willis o'Brien and Ray Harryhausen's legacy in action.
Awesome work on both sculpts!!!!! It has not been the same since they were put into Mocap. Were Sheeva and Motaro Scuplts by you??? I just love the Sheeva character. maybe because she was given so much attention as she was playable.
This was created by me in tribute to your work.... many thanks for giving me the inspiration.

Any chance of seeing a close-up view of the kintaro sculpt, particularly the face????

Hi Paul:
Thanks so much for your thoughtful and kind message - it's doubly welcome because you're a fellow Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen fan!
Sheeva and Motaro - if I'm not mistaken - were created by Kevin Yagher for the third game. He did a superb job. After "Mortal Kombat I and II" became blockbuster hits, John jettisoned many of his old friends who were involved with the original video game's success and I was not asked back on "Mortal Kombat III". According to my sources, after "MK II" he only wanted to associate himself with "top Hollywood talent".
Unfortunately, I have no photographs of Kintaro. In fact, I felt it was uneccessary since Kintaro was precisely the same as Goro. The only way in which they differed was that Kintaro had a tiger-stripe paint job.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. Take care.

It's still really hard for me to believe that something I created over twenty years ago has insinuated itself into the weave of our culture! That's unbelievably gratifying (if somewhat unbelievable)!
And the funny thing is? I knew the franchise had a strong continued presence, but I had no idea just how wide or lasting MK's (let alone Goro's) impact had become until about eight years ago. I was too busy meeting deadlines and paying down a mortgage to really pay attention to all that!
So, many thanks for your wonderful message. It's feedback like this that keeps my spirit afloat! Take care.

Well hello again sir...
In this month's copy of the uk publication Retro Gamer, there is a character piece on Mortal Kombat Sub Boss Goro...
I will scan the page for you, but this part of the last paragraph of the page may delight you..
"Goro's temperament may have softened, even today he remains a formidable and terrorising piece of stop-mottion animation and a classic and iconic character in the Mortal Kombat universe."
The page also has a smaller pic of the arcade credit roll giving your name as creator of the stop motion miniature...
Still getting the respect for your efforts after all these years... just like Ray and Willis...
My best to you as always.
Paul.

Hi Paul:
It's really kind of you to call this piece to my attention. Back in 1990 when I created that little guy out of plasticene, plaster, foam rubber and paint no one would have guessed that "Mortal Kombat" would be remembered nearly 20 years later! It seems like yeserday when I ran into John Tobias at the Chicago Comic Con and he asked me to make Goro . . . . How time flies!
Once again, my kindest regards to you! Take good care.
Sincerely,
Curt
