Description The picture with the arrows: This is a year after the encounter with Kira, and therefore also the death day of Mello. Near doesn't eat (that we know of) in the manga except this part. Why would he be eating a chocolate bar other than he was mourning the death of his former lover?

As a MelloxNear fan, it would be pretty obvious that I would say it's canon but I'm not. I'm 100% sure that Tsugumi Ohba had no intentions of having Mello and Near gay but he made many unintentional hints that would lead someone to think that. Near keeping a photo of Mello in his shirt, Ohba saying that Near "liked" Mello…I think Ohba fell into the yaoi trap hole and fangirls just picked up from it. You know how hungry we are for a gay shipping, lol. In the canon story, Ohba made them rivals that respected each other. Um, I guess you can say they were frenemies in a way. In the end, Near ate chocolate to honor him and to show that he will not be forgotten.Β It's canon in the eyes of a fangirl and it's not canon in the actual story. But, ah, that's what I believe from observing. *sweatdrops*

MelloxNear is definitely canon. There are many points in the story that have made me believe it, even if it isn't told word for word - I like to read between the lines (maybe a little too much, considering I'm a fangirl ), and their relationship and everything that's happened to them (aah, the tragedy) have made me fall in love with this couple. <3

If it wasn't for Mello's rash act, Near would have lost. So he owes him for his life. He valued him as a capable detective but I don't think he felt anything more to thim than maybe friendship of sort. Saying lover is stretching it way too far. Near knew that only he and Mello would surpass L, it was the cooperation that made them win.

AS a complete MelloXNear fan... I'd have to say that... maybe he wasn't his "lover" per say, Mello may have hated him but you can see that Near had great respect for him, the chocolate is out of respect, that's all there is to it I guess. BUT.... there is a good chance there was a little more to the story if ya get what I mean <.<
