A few more details; Matthew or Daxter as he's better known is a magician known as the Supernatural Ambassador. His role is to spread the word of magic around a world very similar to Earth before it follows the same fate as Earth - in other words, before it becomes a world with no magic at all. His simple name, weapon and abilities represent a universal belief in us all to make something fantastical or even magical about our world. It also represents childhood imagination, while his lion form denotes a couragous soul in an animal that isn't nearly as brave as society thinks.

(Lions are, truth be told, very jumpy animals - they're not the biggest, strongest or the fastest of all the cats after all. A zebra kick can break their jaws and only 1/10 cubs live to adulthood.)
