Description
After a final tug, Jim conceded to the fact that he wasn’t going to break the stitching. Time had expired and he knew what had to be done. He looked over a Xena who had been watching him struggle with the strap. She saw the defeated look on his face and knew it was time for her to take over. Jim transferred to Xena’s position while Xena slid to the right side of Beth. It was now Jim’s job to stabilize the three bodies so Xena could work the chute. With all the chaos of what was happening, Beth just started to realize the gravity of the situation and that she was the only one with a parachute. Her face immediately started to strain more than it had already been. Without any words spoken, Jim knew it just dawned on her that he probably wasn’t going to make it. Her concern warmed his heart as it showed she still loved him, and he put on the calmest face he could muster. Beth sucked her hands inward and grabbed both sides of her father’s neck, bringing her face to his. She wanted to hate him at that moment. Hating him would make losing him so much easier, but the truth was that she wasn’t ready to let him go. Xena took hold of the chest strap with her right hand and grabbed the actuation strap with her left. When she was positioned, she looked over at Jim and waited. Jim peered past the back of Beth’s head and saw that Xena was positioned and waiting. He closed his eyes to savor his daughter’s closeness one last time, and then gave a quick nod. With one swift motion, Xena yanked the actuation strap.
