Yeah the game is finnally out,I love that game but I'm not going to buy it yet ,
coz only japanese is released here.
I think I done this one real bad, I suck at coloring so much.
Oh and sis, if you are seeing this, no I don't use reference unless someone tells me to or I'm drawing amime and manga, but I believe someone like you wouldn't need reference would you?

I do a lot of things without reference, more than I should probably XD, but I do use reference occasionally, especially if it's my first time drawing a new character or something.
I'm quite impressed you do those without reference, they're really recognisable.

I'm always creating my own characters, I draw more of my own than characters that already exist, I don't often post my originals up here yet. XD
I have loads of characters and stories revolving around them, but they're still incomplete, parts of their story are missing. But there are loads of different characters with different appearances and personalities wandering around in my head all the time XD And occasionally they stray onto paper.
If that character is supposed to be your own though, I'd try and make him more different and individual, he's a bit too similar to the character he's based off. (For my taste.)
I'm not too bothered about stuff like that, but lots of people might say, that's not an original character, that's a rip-off of Link. If you can live with that fine, but I prefer my characters to be really their own figure, not something similar to something else. It's more fun that way, but if what you wanted was something that closely resembled Link and don't mind what others say, that's okay. Just my thoughts. I would want my characters to be too similar to something else. Sometimes I unintentionally create a character that resembles an existing one but when I notice I usually change that because it bothers me personally.
Maybe you should think about the elements you used in your character and think about why you chose them, do they tell us something about the character or do you just think they look cool?
Is there anything you could add, anything you could take away because it's unneccessary, colours you could change, possibly a different hairstyle, there are many ways to change a character and make them more your own.
I love making my characters fascinating individuals with a history and a story, characters that I enjoy watching grow and evolve.
My characters often change a lot before I more or less settle on a fixed design and quite often even that gets a complete revamp because I thought of something better or more fitting.
I know it can be tempting to copy a character of somebody else that you think is cool, but there's really no need to.
Nobody needs to base their character off anybody else's, it's not that hard to create a truly original character with his own personality and style.
Reference is not cheating. Far from it. You need to reference to learn how to draw. The best way is to draw straight from nature. Copying a picture exactly, I agree, can be cheating, unless it's for practice only and no-one else gets to see it, but you shouldn't claim it as your own, then it's cheating, but that is not referencing.
Referencing is not copying a picture, those are different things.
Referencing might be if I looked at a picture of Spongebob to work out his proportions, colours, placement of his facial features, just to get a good idea of what makes Spongebob Spongebob, but then drew him in a completely different pose with a different expression in a different situation.
That's not cheating.
If I traced the image it would be cheating.
