Heya Dan, critique you requested and critique you shall receive (and I hope Tim Churchmouse or whomever is the abbey's recorder, takes notes as well if they had the net) especially with this emotional scene that only the author himself could possibly envision.
Vision) A very big strong point here, I can clearly see that despite these two familiar faces are incorporeal, the fact you did a picture that 'stresses the basics" (Inking, Colors, anatomy, glow effects, etc) but what really makes this picture stand out is the story line that you threw in to capitalize the scene the emotion spectrum, especially when two deceased heroes, bound by love, reunite in the spiritual realm. So if I had to give it a letter grade, I'd rate this an (A)
Originality) Normally doing a scene where two lovers in the spiritual plane reunite in a tearful reunion has been played out dozens of times in media and RL events, but this one to me is very special and I believe you hit the nail on the head with these two! Even in death, when two characters love each other (and believe me, it's portrayed in the animated series and in the books how Martin cared for Laterose) when they cross to the other side, it's a wonderful reunion, and you did this near flawlessly! (A)
Technique) Now here's where my score kind of drops a bit, although I can see the two are glowing, to me it doesn't appear they're spirits, they do have a bit of a lowered opacity but the thing that makes it unconvincing is the fact they appear to just..."glow"...and they don't appear ghostly enough. In retrospect, this could also be played out as a re-enactment (going by the pic itself, not the pic + story you composed) by some residents of Redwall or perhaps a renactment in a medieval festival. (Either way is fine) Letter grade: (e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="370" title=" (Cool)"/>
Overall Impact) Now this is where you nailed it right on the head! Between the heartwarming tale and the image itself conveying the scene as you composed, I think it's a delicate balancing act that you performed nicely! I believe if I were to hear this vocally, I think I would be equally moved to an emotional section of my feelings where I feel bad these two passed away or killed (in the form of LateRose) but at the same tone glad to see these two were able to see each other again so they can be together in the next plane of existence.
Overall Grade Dan: I'm rating this probably one of your best works so far! (A!!) Keep up the great work!
Closing Comments) If you need help with the details to help make these two spirits appear more "ghostly" or "incorporeal" then I'd be happy to share my knowledge.

Heartwarming, and cleverly put together, mixing designs from the book and film continuities. Especially like how while the characters are definitely from the season 3 era, the sword is undoubtedly the meteorite blade seen in seasons 1 and 2 - it bridges the apparent continuity issue where Martin "gives up the sword" far earlier than in the books by emphasising how in both book and film, the sword of Martin only contains trace parts of the sword of Luke. A pretty significant detail in context as the latter is a sword Rose does not have a good history with in the films...

It works, but when you get the chance, do give the work of Don Rosa a look as well - he has some pretty good techniques for indicating ghostly characters. Try experimenting with lighter coloured outlines as well. One of the aspects that may make it seem off would be how the glow is coming from a surface that is darker than the glow itself. Also when contrasting colours are next to each other, one can seem lighter than the other even if they have the same value... ... ... oh.
Nevermind, just noticed the comment was a year and a half old o.O You've probably heard this before since.

What a lovely drawing of these two. The ending of Martin the Warrior had me in tears but the epilogue suggests that maybe they do reunite after all (assuming that Rose's spirit resides in the laterose cutting).
I've actually been thinking of drawing these two together as spirits for quite a while now but I have so many things to draw that I just haven't been able to.

I actually have quite the bit of Martin-the-Warrior themed drawing ideas. I've already mentioned the one about Martin and Rose but I also kinda want to draw the Gawtrybe squirrels or the Warden of Marshwood Hills or Queen Amballa. So many ideas so little time. ;w;

You're very welcome.
I like that idea, it's reassuring that Martin and Rose could be reunited.

Heh heh, yeah... within reason. X)
Oh gosh, poor Martin's been paired off with so many Mary Sues, both in actual fanfics and parodies of fanfics...

I don't think Martin could ever be with another lady other than Rose. In fact, this particularly lovely fanfic demonstrated Martin remaining faithful to her memory: www.fanfiction.net/s/4006688/1…
The fact that Matthias happened to be Martin's "double" isn't so strange, since there have been people who've been noted to look like historical figures unrelated to them. Look at Nicolas Cage and his historical doppelganger.
