Description Martin the Warrior & Laterose of Noonvale — A Spiritual Reunion

-------------------------------------

It was a warm summer’s night over Mossflower. All was quiet and everybeast was sound asleep. Not a creature was stirring… except for one mouse.

Shafts of moonlight shone dimly through the stained glass windows of the Great Hall, casting their multicolored hues on the stone floor, as a pair of blazing braziers illuminated the pride and joy of Redwall Abbey; the Great Tapestry. In their flickering light, the image of their legendary hero, Martin the Warrior, smiled out from the venerable cloth, a paw resting lightly on the red pommel stone of his magnificent Sword.
Though the image didn’t physically move, his eyes seemed to follow everything, always watching over the Abbey in spirit. As the moon reached its zenith, the Guardian of Redwall stepped down from his tapestry, manifesting himself in full armour with his Sword slung over his shoulder. Noiselessly, the Warrior Mouse strode through that silent hall, deep in thought.

Time and again over the countless seasons, he had seen travellers come and go from the Abbey, but the previous winter had been the first time somebeast had come from so far away as Noonvale.
Noonvale! What memories that name brought back to him! Martin hadn’t thought of that hallowed glade in many a season. All his life, he’d kept that place secret for fear that evil might find the peaceful creatures who lived there. In some ways, he’d put it from his mind, haunted by the painful memories. He thought he had quite forgotten, until those two seasons back, when Abbot Saxtus had welcomed the travellers from Noonvale; a mousemaid named Aubretia and her hedgehog companion Bultip. He had listened just as keenly as everyone else as she had related to them the story of his early life, the tale of “Martin the Warrior” – and in his quiet way, he too had shed his share of tears at its tragic conclusion. He fondly remembered Bultip’s ancestor, Pallum, a dear friend and travelling companion, and Aubretia’s forefather, Brome of Noonvale. The Warrior had seen it at once; her close resemblance to the fair sister of Brome, Laterose of Noonvale!
The memory of Rose felt like an icicle being stabbed into his soul. He had blamed himself all his life for her tragic death at the Battle of Marshank. If only he had insisted she remained at Noonvale, she might have lived. Blinded by his mission of vengeance against Badrang the Tyrant, he had failed to protect the only mousemaid he ever loved. How could he return to Noonvale with such memories, or face her bereaved parents with the greatest failure of his life?
It was a twisted irony that her death was what lead him to travel south and become the legend he was to become in Mossflower, eventually co-founding Redwall Abbey and what it stood for, bringing such happiness to others that he could never fully realise for himself.

Stepping outside, Martin looked back at the Abbey building. He had quite lost count of the time it had been standing.
Moving towards a garden area in front of Great Hall, he returned to the object of his midnight wander. There, close to the wall, was growing a young rosebush; one gift from the Noonvale visitors. It was a cutting from the original bush that was planted long ago on the grave of his beloved Rose.
All through the winter, the blind herbalist Simeon had tended it, awaiting the arrival of spring to plant it out. The Warrior was pleased to see it thriving, but it was a late bloomer. Rightly was it called the Laterose.
As he drew near, Martin could see, at long last, the first budding roses finally appearing. Sticking his Sword into the ground, the mouse spirit moved closer to behold the flowering bush, reaching out a ghostly paw to caress the young roses with his blessing. For a while, he just stood there, thinking of his beloved, and he smiled fondly to remember the good times they’d had together. After so long, he felt better for being able to pay his respects.

Suddenly, somebeast touched him on the shoulder. Martin stiffened in surprise. How could anybeast physically touch him, an ethereal being? Unless…
“Martin?”
That voice! The Guardian Spirit of Redwall trembled, feeling as though his heart might start beating again! He barely dared to hope…
The sweet voice spoke again.
“It’s been so long. I’ve missed you so much…”
Martin turned slowly and there she stood, glowing in the moonlight.
“Rose?”
It was indeed Laterose of Noonvale, the pretty mousemaid’s spirit manifesting from the rosebush itself! Even after so long, she was as beautiful as ever – somehow, the ethereal glow complimented her fair features.
Martin’s grey eyes filled with tears, feeling such joy that he hadn’t known in ages.
“Aye, Martin. It is I. You couldn’t come back to see me, so I travelled from Noonvale to be with you!”
The two old lovers moved closer, gazing into each other’s eyes. They needed no more words at this moment. At long last, after many seasons of involuntary separation, the Warrior and his Rose had at last found happiness… and now they would always be together.

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Heya Dan, critique you requested and critique you shall receive (and I hope Tim Churchmouse or whomever is the abbey's recorder, takes notes as well if they had the net) especially with this emotional scene that only the author himself could possibly envision.

Vision) A very big strong point here, I can clearly see that despite these two familiar faces are incorporeal, the fact you did a picture that 'stresses the basics" (Inking, Colors, anatomy, glow effects, etc) but what really makes this picture stand out is the story line that you threw in to capitalize the scene the emotion spectrum, especially when two deceased heroes, bound by love, reunite in the spiritual realm. So if I had to give it a letter grade, I'd rate this an (A)

Originality) Normally doing a scene where two lovers in the spiritual plane reunite in a tearful reunion has been played out dozens of times in media and RL events, but this one to me is very special and I believe you hit the nail on the head with these two! Even in death, when two characters love each other (and believe me, it's portrayed in the animated series and in the books how Martin cared for Laterose) when they cross to the other side, it's a wonderful reunion, and you did this near flawlessly! (A)

Technique) Now here's where my score kind of drops a bit, although I can see the two are glowing, to me it doesn't appear they're spirits, they do have a bit of a lowered opacity but the thing that makes it unconvincing is the fact they appear to just..."glow"...and they don't appear ghostly enough. In retrospect, this could also be played out as a re-enactment (going by the pic itself, not the pic + story you composed) by some residents of Redwall or perhaps a renactment in a medieval festival. (Either way is fine) Letter grade: (e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="370" title=" (Cool)"/>

Overall Impact) Now this is where you nailed it right on the head! Between the heartwarming tale and the image itself conveying the scene as you composed, I think it's a delicate balancing act that you performed nicely! I believe if I were to hear this vocally, I think I would be equally moved to an emotional section of my feelings where I feel bad these two passed away or killed (in the form of LateRose) but at the same tone glad to see these two were able to see each other again so they can be together in the next plane of existence.

Overall Grade Dan: I'm rating this probably one of your best works so far! (A!!) Keep up the great work!

Closing Comments) If you need help with the details to help make these two spirits appear more "ghostly" or "incorporeal" then I'd be happy to share my knowledge.

Thanks very much for the critique, Alex!
Indeed, I was certainly very pleased with how this came out in general.

As you say, though, the low point is them not looking "ghostly" enough - maybe if I'd actually made them slightly transparent or something? Actually, I did intend to do that after I finished colouring them, to lower the opacity on their layers... but I forgot... ;;
At least adding glows around their outlines helped a bit, but I guess I could use a few more tips.

Heartwarming, and cleverly put together, mixing designs from the book and film continuities. Especially like how while the characters are definitely from the season 3 era, the sword is undoubtedly the meteorite blade seen in seasons 1 and 2 - it bridges the apparent continuity issue where Martin "gives up the sword" far earlier than in the books by emphasising how in both book and film, the sword of Martin only contains trace parts of the sword of Luke. A pretty significant detail in context as the latter is a sword Rose does not have a good history with in the films...

Thanks very much! Having grown to love these characters from seeing the cartoon, I really wanted to see them together again!

Yes, I've always kind of had my own imagining of the Sword of Martin, as opposed to its designs from the cartoon. Much of my inspiration probably comes from the original Fangorn illustrations from the Redwall "10th Anniversary" illustrated hardback edition that I've had for years, along with some Elvish elements from Lord of the Rings to give it some elegance. Although the inscription is more along the lines of Dwarfen runes

Ah, indeed... whatever sword Martin had in the days of his youth, whether it was his father's or some other sword, there was very little of the original left, considering that Tsarmina broke the blade off. What became the legendary Sword we all know is the one reforged by Boar the Fighter.

Though, the lighting around the lines is a bit off-putting, if that's how I should say it.

Yeah, that was kind of an experimental effect to make them look ethereal, seeing as how they're basically ghosts.

It works, but when you get the chance, do give the work of Don Rosa a look as well - he has some pretty good techniques for indicating ghostly characters. Try experimenting with lighter coloured outlines as well. One of the aspects that may make it seem off would be how the glow is coming from a surface that is darker than the glow itself. Also when contrasting colours are next to each other, one can seem lighter than the other even if they have the same value... ... ... oh.

Nevermind, just noticed the comment was a year and a half old o.O You've probably heard this before since.

Heh, either way, I probably could do with looking at improving my "ethereal" effects if ever I was to draw the Spirit of Martin again at some point...

Among which to try to remember they should be slightly transparent, as well as the obvious factors of glowing in the dark and casting no shadow...

What a lovely drawing of these two. The ending of Martin the Warrior had me in tears but the epilogue suggests that maybe they do reunite after all (assuming that Rose's spirit resides in the laterose cutting).
I've actually been thinking of drawing these two together as spirits for quite a while now but I have so many things to draw that I just haven't been able to.

It had been an idea, ever since finally seeing the "Martin the Warrior" animated series for the first time fairly recently.
I figured that to be with Martin again, Rose might find her way to Redwall in spirit through the cutting of the Laterose bush that was transplanted to the Abbey...

I actually have quite the bit of Martin-the-Warrior themed drawing ideas. I've already mentioned the one about Martin and Rose but I also kinda want to draw the Gawtrybe squirrels or the Warden of Marshwood Hills or Queen Amballa. So many ideas so little time. ;w;

I like to keep within the spirit of the subject matter, myself... so no randomly pairing off established characters with some Mary Sue and having them be okay with it!

Indeed... when I know for a fact that Martin died single and it was never confirmed that he was ever unfaithful to Rose's memory by sleeping with any other mousemaids...
Of course, how Matthias happened to be his exact double was never explained, unless Luke the Warrior had any other relatives with descendants...

Kelaiah In reply to DCLeadboot [2017-10-11 23:51:14 +0000 UTC]

I don't think Martin could ever be with another lady other than Rose. In fact, this particularly lovely fanfic demonstrated Martin remaining faithful to her memory: www.fanfiction.net/s/4006688/1…

The fact that Matthias happened to be Martin's "double" isn't so strange, since there have been people who've been noted to look like historical figures unrelated to them. Look at Nicolas Cage and his historical doppelganger.

Yes... though in "Legend of Luke" it stated that thanks to his injuries from Tsarmina, Martin forgot most of his past, which means he might have possibly forgotten Rose, so he wouldn't have been able to open up about her anyway.

Yup. Here's what I mean: www.google.com/search?q=Nicola…

DCLeadboot In reply to Kelaiah [2017-10-12 15:46:58 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, yeah... of course, Martin vowed never to speak of Noonvale for fear that evil might find them, but even then you'd think he'd be able to confide in his best friends...

Sure are some wacky doubles there... seems that nature recycles some of the old genes somewhere...
But then again, all humans are related somewhere down the line - just that records don't stretch back to Adam & Eve outside of the Bible... which sadly isn't considered binding proof...
