About the Dawns

Dawn dragons are a large serpentine breed of dragon, standing at anywhere from 4-6 feet tall at the shoulder, and ranging in length from anywhere between 16-60 feet in length. Their bodies are slender, and these dragons are so incredibly flexible that they can tie themselves in knots. While awkward walkers on land, Dawns are suited to life in the sky. Their flight is powered by magic, and their four vestigial wings are used primarily as rudders to direct their path. Dawns are primarily defined by their scales. These miniscule scales are smooth, almost like skin, and are photoreactive. A Dawn's greatest camouflage is these special scales, which reflect the light of the sky around them. The color of a Dawn Dragon's scales is determined at the type of sky they are born under, and some colors, such as a Red Dawn, are immensely rare.

The gems on their bodies are hollow, and filled with a special liquid. Dawns use these gems as barometers, to sense changes in weather. While graceful fliers, they cannot sustain their flight in poor weather, and always migrate to calmer skies. When a tribe of Dawn dragons arrives, it's a sign of good weather.

These dragons are incredibly intelligent, and use their dexterity to craft jewlery, clothes, accessories, and blankets, often containing their own scales and hair. They trade with locals on their travels, or give them as gifts to those of whom they have forged strong bonds. It's also possible for a Dawn to live its entire life in the air; they land only to court, lay their eggs, bring up their young, or when the weather forces them to.

As their name would imply, these dragons are most active during dawn and throughout the day, and they specialize in light magic. This magic not only powers their flight, but is a primary defense against the larger and more hostile dragons of their realm. This magic is channeled through their ten pointed crown, and is used by poachers to craft magical artifacts.
