Even through her determination, she has a habit of being flighty and getting easily bored with things that don't interest her.
In relationships with others, she can be a very complicated. While extremely loyal to those closest to her, Hanabi can often be jealous and possessive. Though she can be capable of great anger and will become very moody, she forgives quickly, not caring to hold on to things. Background
Hanabi was born second in line to Houtarou and Kanade Kano in Asaka, Japan. She has an older brother named Hikaru, six years her elder, who she is very close with. Hanabi hadn't been planned and was quiet literally an accident – hence the large gap in her and Hikaru's age. The family lived in Japan until Hanabi turned six and her father was offered a position at a prestigious university in California teaching Human Biology – he had gone back and forth to America before, teaching various seminars at different schools and was considered one of the top professors in his field. The pay was much better than what he was making at the High School he taught at in Asaka, so Kanade implored him to take the job. The family packed up and headed to America.
Hanabi hated the move, wanting to stay back in Asaka with her best friend Ayana, who she had grown up with. She tended to act out, especially at school – though mostly from a lack of understanding, considering the English language hadn't come easy to her. Her mother, Kanade spoke with one of Hanabi's teachers and she suggested a dance class that her own daughter attended. The class had been set up to help kids gain focus and discipline through their art and Kanade thought it might help her daughter. Hanabi loved the dance classes and took them every year since then.
Though the classes helped with a lot of Hanabi's problems, they didn't help all of them. Less than a year after moving to California, she experienced a very strange occurrence. Her mother was in the kitchen cooking dinner for the family when Hanabi entered, asking to get a new game she really wanted. Her mother told her it would have to wait as they were short on money and Hanabi grew angry. When she yelled at her mother, the flames on the stove burst out, setting a nearby rag on fire. They chalked it up as a freak accident with the stove.
Her next big experience with her abilities was when she was eight and managed to set a tree on fire when spider fell out of it onto her. There had been many small incidents since then, but she managed to keep it under wraps. Hanabi only had trouble when she lost her temper or became too excited. Although, her biggest experience with her abilities was when she was eleven years old. Her brother, Hikaru was driving her home after detention - she had gotten into another fight at school. The siblings got into an argument that became pretty heated. Somehow, Hanabi's powers triggered and part of the car burst into flames. Hikaru panicked – he had only been driving for a short time – and swerved into traffic where a truck slammed into them.
Both siblings survived, but Hanabi broke a couple of ribs, suffered from some lacerations (including a particularly bad on on her thigh, where a piece of shrapnel lodged itself), and a concussion. Hikaru was paralyzed from the waist down. She has yet to stop blaming herself for it.
After the accident, she grew a little more out of control, mostly out of hatred for herself and what she could do. When she was twelve, a representative from the Empyrean Academy approached the Kano family, offering a solution to her bad behavior. He promised the school would help her flourish and increase her focus and her parents agreed to send her. She calmed down pretty quickly after starting at the Academy, learning what it really was and that she wasn't alone, that they could help her.
