I know more people in their teens and up who watch Adventure Time than I do kids. I think that's because the kids don't get it the same way the older audience members do.

The thing is, he hasn't succumbed. He's still in control. Everything the Ice King does is merely corrupted versions of wishes that Simon had.
The Ice King is essentially a person with severe dementia given massive superpowers.
A testament to his willpower that this was all the Crown could do to him- it wants to freeze everything.

My thoughts exactly. If putting on the crown did that to Finn the first time he wore it, I can thoroughly understand why Betty left Simon when he put it on the first time... That must've been so terrifying...
