Description “Oh my, what do we have here?” Simon halted mid-step, glancing over his shoulder at the boat beside him. A bag rested on the dock next to it, a small glimpse of shiny yellow and red sticking out, a spike pushing up through the opening. He put down his pack and knelt down beside the bag.

“Like what ye’ see there, son?”

Simon frantically jumped to his feet. “Oh! Oh, I’m sorry! I don’t mean to go through your stuff it’s just…..is that a crown in your bag?” He gestured toward it, smoothing out the front of his jacket a little.

The old man grinned and laughed, showing his not-quite full set of teeth. “It sure is! My son found it while he was abroad in a country someplace. I’m not to up to the details but…”

“Oh, it’s fine,” Simon grinned. He knelt down again. “Do…do you mind if I take a look at it? I’m studying to be an antiquary of ancient artifacts. Maybe I could appraise it for you?” He carefully pulled the crown from the pack. “Hmmmm….” he hummed as he turned it around in his hands.

It wasn’t much like anything he ever seen before. A spiky, simply design made of gold. Three red jewels were inlaid in the front and sides. But it was the largest one on the front that caught his eye. Could that be….the same jewel he found in The Enchiridion? The same shade, the same shape. Very interesting.

“Well, what do ya think?” The man leaned from his boat, bearing an ugly but charming smirk. “Is it worth a lot? You seem mighty into it!”

Simon couldn’t help but stifle a small laugh. “Yes, actually.” He turned to the old man. “It seems you may have found yourself a potential buyer.” The old man folded his arms - ready to haggle. “If this is as ancient as I think it is, and seeing as it’s made from solid gold - and beautifully inlaid gemstones - I’d be looking to give you around….450?”

He huffed. “600.”

“Mmmm….500.”

“550.”

“How about 530?”

The old man grunted, looked off into the harbour, then shot out his hand. “Ye’ just bought yerself a fine antique crown.”

With a shake of his hand, and then payment after a short visit to an ATM in town, Simon bid the old dock worker farewell, hooking the crown on his arm. A smile spread on his face.

He bet Betty would enjoy this.

Simon Petrikov (c) Pen Ward.

Actually made a background. Wow. Didn't expect that to happen.

The Slavic peoples have many tails of ice lords, demons and gods going back to before Roman times. The crown's origins lay somewhere in those stories...
