Description For the Disney Club Contest 59-Six New Fairytales

When I first read this particular fairytale, I was honestly a little put off by how perfect the main character was. I know he was meant as an example to children, but a boy with innumerable talents who can do no wrong doesn't really fit the bill for a compelling story. Then I drew a female Oni, and I knew how to handle this.

The main character, Momotaro, is a gardener at the Imperial palace, but makes regular trips home to visit his father and ailing mother and to bring them any money that he's earned. I'm omitting the part about him coming from an actual peach. Instead he was given this name because of his talent for nursing plants back to health.

The kingdom is periodically ransacked by Onis hailing from an island to the East, and they're demanding that the Empress appear before their matriarch, supposedly to discuss terms of unconditional surrender. At the worst possible time, Momotaro requests more time off to visit his parents, whose conditions are deteriorating, and he's "enlisted" to go in the Empress' place masquerading as her son in exchange for his family's welfare, his mission to help the army infiltrate the Oni stronghold and destroy them once and for all. Accompanied by a tiny but mighty Japanese Chin dog, Momotaro arrives at the demon island, but because a "prince" has come instead of the Empress, the Onis interpret this as a proposition of marriage to the Matriarch's daughter.

The warrior princess Tsun and her vicious pet monkey directs Momotaro to an ancient peach tree which hasn't produced any fruit since it was planted a thousand years ago, telling he has ten days to make it bloom if he wants her to accept his proposal. If she doesn't, the negotiations with the humans will go no further.

As Momotaro struggles to bring the tree back to life, all the while delivering messages to the army using a courier pheasant, he discovers that the Onis are struggling to survive on this island where nothing ever grows, the sun never shines, and citizens literally have to fight to live. Caring for the tree is a test from Tsun to see if he is the bringer of hope her people (and herself) desperately need.

If the tree won't bloom, perhaps LOVE will...

It still feels true to the original right?

Thumbs up. I reminds of some old Gibhli poster. I like how used the lighting to put the spot on the peach tree.

I'm happy everything turn out to be fine, even if I correct you for no reason (sorry for that, I just wasn't sure if rules allow it).
Your poster is great. The use shadows and that beautiful tree makes it very appealing. As for characters, both of them look nice, that would be interesting movie to watch.

It's okay. I'm glad you brought it up, actually. I wouldn't want to enter and have it be taken down for breaking any rules.

I usually end up rushing when I make movie posters because I get so excited, but I'm glad this one turned out the way it did. For movies like this, starting with some character designs helps me build the story.

This is an interesting variation of the Momotaro story. I like how the relationship between Momotaro and the Onis as it actually a series of unfortunate and oddly related events for both parties that bring them together. Green Momotaro and Tsun looks like such great characters too!

It did seem a little out of nowhere for him to just up and leave his parents to declare war on an island that had nothing to do with him XP

Oh and Momotaro is the human. Princess Tsun is the the green one. ^^

Yeah, I thought that too when I read the story. A bit random and bit brutal, considering some of the best character traits Momotaro had was his kind heart to share his dumplings and to work together in a team of his friends. Maybe its originally like a western knight and dragon story where the knight doesn't have a very good reason to fight the dragon. . .Ā
Ā
I'm glad the hero and (assumed) "monster" are getting along better in your story.Ā Ā

It sure didn't seem like the Onis were bothering anyone at the time. As far as we know, the Mom and Dad weren't even aware the Onis existed.

Thanks. It's not even really a situation like in Wicked where the monsters are just completely misunderstood. They ransack human villages and they fight each other, but it's because that's what they've had to do to survive.

Wow, sounds like a great story! Your poster is beautiful... it looks like one you would see for an official movie.
