agree totally with you^^
i love vaan despite his "so-called insignificant role"
vaan is normal, he's not emo character like Cloud and Squall (though i love cloud and squall too)
he's more like Zidane or Luke from tales of Abyss
his role in dissidia is cute too (saving terra and protect her from kefka^^)

vaan is an idiot... he's not purposely rude... he just doesn't think things through
(one of the few people who likes Vaan)
one of my other favorite idiots is Bartz... and they get along just fine in dissidia....

I love Vaan!
Yes he is a little selfish, but aren't all of a little selfish here and there. ^^

Yeah - it made him a more 'real' character to me. And thanks to the English localisation of voice acting, I found listening to him HEAPS more tolerable than listening to Tidus.

If Vaan was actually that rude he WOULD actually be MORE popular. Look at some of the most favorites, Sephiroth, Cloud and Squall.
A lot of Vaan's hate really comes from the fact that he doesn't act like the usual protaganist hero.

I guess you're right. XD
Vaan really wasn't much of a protagonist, since he seemed to be just following Ashe around.

Vaan is a normal person caught up in the whirlwind of events. Not to mention it was supposed to be Balthier that would be the main character (thus why they gave him that line!). So, the creators didn't put much work into him.
Still I like Vaan, and like having a protaganist that isn't some super chosen powered up guy.

I read somewhere that Basch was supposed to be the main character, but Squeenix thought fans wouldn't relate to an older scruffy war guy. I think Vaan was more of a last minute creation to come up with a prettier main character. Regardless, I love his stupidity. XD

I've heard it was Balthier. But, I like Vaan. Without meaning too he caused everything that happened to start. That's pretty protaganist like.

Truthfully, I can't really see Balthier as the main character. He's not really related to the final boss in any way. I think if he was supposed to be the main character, the final boss'd be Cid or something.
He caused everything to happen only on Vaan's side of the story. But if you think about it, the whole story is so Dalmasca, Ashe, Bashe centric.

Technically, Balthier is a former Judge so he would have hatred for what Vayne has done to former his home and emperor. Plus Dr. Cid was funded by Vayne. <_<

Oh yeah! I forgot about that part.
That makes sense, but I still think it's Basch. I think I read it on Wiki or something. XP

It is. You can envision the gameplay actually starting at Basch's escape from prison and not lose all that much, with Vaan's story as a 'prologue' of sorts (I think they should've switched the playable-character thing a bit).
I think they did consider Balthier to be the main character at one point, but personally I don't think he'd really work as well as he did. Balthier's cool, but if we'd had to deal with him from day one it'd either be annoying or disjointed. Not to mention, getting the reveals about Cid being his father MUCH too soon in the story. By having him in smaller doses, Balthier's awesomeness leaks out much more effectively.
Basch's role as the main character was nixed when they considered the target audience in Japan. The Dev. team for FFXII had previously worked on another game with a 30-something protagonist - 'Vagrant Story', which is also set at some other time-zone in the Ivalice universe. However, VS - while well-recieved by critics and gamers - didn't sell as well as they expected. I don't know if that's because it didn't have FF in the title (and it isn't really much like FF games, being very different gameplay and genre-wise, but still ...), or whatever, but they felt that Ashley Riot (VS's hero) had turned potential gamers off from buying the game. So the focus was switched to Vaan during development.
I don't know if Vaan WAS only added in at the last minute or not, really. I heard that at one point, he was meant to be Basch's squire rather than Balthier's apprentice (which would have tied him in well with Basch as the hero), and certain story aspects were dropped as well. For instance, Vaan was supposed to have a childhood-friend-brother-sister relationship with Ashe which would justify him joining the party to help her; and Penelo's older brothers (dead in the final product) were supposed to be involved, or at least have-been-involved, with the Resistance. Not to mention the dropped element of Airship battles ...
Some of these ideas some REALLY epic, and make it all the sadder that they weren't in the final product. Damn you, SquareEnix bigwigs ...

According to the magazine "Edge" that was just released Balthier was supposed to be the main character.

Wow. XD
I don't really know. Let's agree to disagree, then?

Holy crap, Balthier's 40? For some reason, I REALLY think they mean "Basch". He seems much more 40 year old man.
I keep reading that it's Basch on various sites.

I did check and re-read the article. The magazine actually made a lot of errors I didn't see. They did mean "Basch." Freaken idiots, can't even get characters straight.
In case your wondering now, here are their ages.
Vaan - 17
Penelo - 17
Balthier - 22
Fran - unknown (at least 50)
Ashe - 19
Basch - 36

Yeah, I knew Balthier looked way to young to be fourty. I think they kind of made a good choice going with a younger main character, but they should've come up with a better one than Vaan.

The idea around Vaan is that he's a normal person. That's a first for a main FF. All of the other ones are, chosen ones, chosen ones, chosen ones, chosen ones, chosen ones, chosen ones, enhanced being, chosen ones, chosen ones, chosen ones, "chosen" ones. See the pattern here?
They wanted something new. And, anyway, I've always liked Vaan. He's the reason the party was formed in the first place. <_<

I guess Penelo wasn't as good as Ashe. But stat wise, Fran was the lowest. She actually has the lowest growths in the game. So I never used her.
A lot of guys do think she's pretty though. Can't say the same cause I'm a girl. XD

I know what you mean! Give all the good licenses and spells to one unit and make them a beast! Then, pick two others as backup, preferably a healer and a "tank", then leave the other 3 as dead weight. I always used Basch, Vaan, and Ashe, with Basch as my "beastly character". XD

I don't give a bucktooth what Ashe, Penelo, and Vayne said to Vaan. He's just as good a character as anyone else. Popularity is nothing. It's your usefulness that counts. If you just stand around and pretty and do nothing, then you're useless to everyone, and Vaan is quite useful, in certain situations.
