WARNING!!!! SKYWARD SWORD SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Link stared at the back of her head, unsure of what to think. His mind was numbly comprehending what she was saying.

“I...I used you.”

The words floated by his ears. But...Zelda...she couldn't...she couldn't be the Goddess...He'd known her his whole life...how...what...?

“I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am for pulling you into all of this, Link. But you have to understand this is a war, and the fate of the land hangs in the balance. I need your strength to tip the scales in our favor...”

Link's eyes widened. So...she...she purposefully made them friends...so that...he...

What?

“All that may be well intentioned and true, but it doesn't mean it's right...and it doesn't excuse my actions,” she continued, her voice progressively sounding tighter. She was about to cry. He took a step toward her. “But I'm prepared to pay the price for -”

He spun her around, grabbed her hands in his, and pushed her to the wall. Her eyes widened in fear. “Link,” she whispered, tears running down her face. “I'm so sorry...” She sobbed. “I didn't mean to hurt you, I -”

He shoved his lips against hers in a kiss, then pulled away. Her eyes searched his for a moment, then she leaned forward and pulled him back to her.

It didn't matter if Zelda was the Goddess or that shy girl in Skyloft...he loved her. And he was finally reassured with the fact that she did too.

It felt like ages, but it still wasn't long enough. They finally pulled apart, and Zelda whispered, “To ensure that the seal holds, I will remain here in this time...deep in sleep for thousands of years.”

“You...you can't!”

She turned away from him. “Link...I can't say it enough. I'm so sorry for the way I had to involve you in this. But until my memory of things before our lifetime returned to me, I had no idea we were fated to carry such a heavy destiny. Before all this, I was happy just spending my days hanging around with you in Skyloft. I wanted that feeling to last forever.”

Link took a step toward her and slid his hand in hers. “I did too.”

She smiled, then suddenly pulled away and walked into the center of the platform in the room. A golden light surrounded her, and Link ran toward her. “No, stop!” he cried, trying to break through the golden force field around her. “Please!” His fists pounded on something solid.

“While it's true that I am a Hylia reborn, I'm still my father's daughter and your friend...I'm still your Zelda.”

He barely heard her over the screaming in his head.

“DON'T GO! I need you! I...I love you.”

She stared at him, her eyes soft. “When Demise is finally gone there will be no more need for the seal that binds him, and then I'll be able to wake up.”

Demise...but...he couldn't...

No. He shook his head, holding his tears back. He had to.

“So I'm going to ask you a favor, sleepyhead. Ever since we were kids, I'd always be the one to wake you up when you slept in.” Link felt a warm tear run down his cheek. “But this time, when all of this is over, will you come to wake me up?”

Link let his tears fall freely now. “Zelda...please...”

“Link, promise me...promise me you'll wake me up...”

Rays of blinding, white-hot light shot through the golden seal she was in, but Link did not leave her side. “I...I promise!”

The barrier burst in a fit of scattered light, and the room slowly dimmed. The frozen figure of Zelda stood in front of him.

Fast asleep.

“I promise.”
