Thank you, Julie. I am about to paint a mountain scene on a 24 by 30 inch canvas. I have never painted on a canvas that big. It is going to be one of those cabin in the snow paintings. Every painter has to do one of those But the perspective on this will be a little different than the traditional cabin in the mountains painting

My pleasure Robert Good luck with your new painting my friend! I'm sure it will be great I know what you mean about the cabin painting, we've all done it. Mine was in the woods rather than in a mountain setting. [link] It sounds like it will be festive perhaps, a winter scene?

On the DeLorean Series, I started painting the sides of the framed canvas on the 8th painting. I like the look, so I am going back to the others and doing the same. Three of them have staples on the side, which might be a problem. I think I can paint over the staples. I did one the other night and it was hard going ack and trying to match the colors.

I love the look of painted edges on my canvases. Some of my paintings still look better framed but others are better without. Sometimes the frame can detract from the painting and you definately don't want that. As for the stapled sides, I've got one painting like this and left it as it was, painting the edges and went without a frame. But, it's hanging in my bedroom where nobody sees it I think it looks fine, and those who've seen it like it, but I guess my eyes notice it because I'm more critical of it. Good luck with matching the colors. I had a hard time with that once and ended up having to paint the edges a solid black, wasn't happy with that and ended up framing it. Your series has been a joy to watch, my friend. I look forward to your next works!

Last night, I painted the edges of one with staples. The acrylic paint covers the staples fairly well. I just wished I had used all canvas with no staples on the side, but at the time I thought they would all be frames. I do like the look of unframed canvas with painted sides.

Yeah, it covers it But I guess for me, it bugs me because I know they're there so my eyes go to them. It still looks fine and most don't notice. But now I buy only canvas panels which need to be framed of course, but they take up less space when I'm storing them, or back stapled canvases so that way I have the option to frame or not.

12 is my fav number and you did it proud. I love the mountains. The texture in them is wonderful as well as in the trees below but they do command attention. Since the colors are the similar from the mountain and sky as in the car they draw my eye from one to the other not really detracting from either but reinforcing the relationship between the two of journey and destination. (For me anyways *^_~*)

Thank you. I spent probably more time drawing out the composition, then painting it. The tricky part was trying to balance the bottom half of the painting with the top half.

I hear some of the best paintings are constructed in the pre-painting stage. You balanced it very well. Mission accomplished

I just realized that I used the same set of 10 or so colors on this series. I didn't plan on that, but I think it helps tie them all together.

This is a very strong finish to the series. I recognized the Rockies in the thumbnail of the picture in my messages before I even read the description. You really nailed their (in my biased opinion) very unique look. Makes me homesick for Utah just looking at them May I ask if this is any specific place, or just a general representation of your impression? Also is it from the Utah or Colorado side? Very lovely work.

DeloreanREB In reply to TrustInDoubt [2009-11-23 17:51:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

I have approached the Rockies from both sides. This is really not any specific place. I didn't use any pictures for a reference, just memories from my mind.

My first glimpse of the Rockies was at the age of 7. We were coming from Texas. I could see their white snowy peaks a hundred miles away. I have been captivated by them every since.

When I came from Utah, we could see them miles away across the Utah desert. It was in the summer and we were in the hot desert. Seeing their snowy peaks seemed almost unreal. Then we left the desert, climbed up into the mountains, and found ourselves in forest. Here in East Texas, we have to travel hundreds of miles to get out of the forest. Coming from the West Texas desert, it takes about 800 miles to reach the forest. So to go from desert to forest in less than an hour, just by changing elevation, was new to me.

I lived in the mountains near SLC, so I grew up with the Rockies, but they have never ceased to amaze me every time I looked out the window. Thank you for a depiction that does them justice.

And of course the Delorean is lovely too, although I am more of a Stingray fan myself ^_^

Have you decided what you are going to work on now that this series is finished?

Thank you, Gloria. When I was painting the mountains, I tried to envision where the snow would pile up and where bare rock would be exposed. I think I did okay considering I am a flat-lander in the tropics

Wow! That's really good! This might be your best one of the series (though i really liked that one with the house, too). You nailed the rockies. I would have gone over the rockies and sky with a light wash of cerulean blue to push them back some, but that's a style judgment call. This looks really good with the way you laid in the trees and the change of values on the foot hills. And i like how the colors get stronger as they get closer. And, of course, great work on the car! It's a really beautiful piece of work you have here!

Thank you I had a lot of fun painting this. I have always enjoyed painting mountains.

I debated on putting clouds in the sky and adding some hazy atmosphere to the mountains. But I wanted that feeling of cold days where the air is clear and sharp. By doing so, I do loose some depth. And I wanted the open sky feel of a clear sky. I am not sure if I pulled it off, but that is what I was aiming for.

Sometimes I tend to over-think a painting I envy those painters that can whip a painting together with no seconds thoughts or looking back .
