West of the Pecos is the 8th painting in the DeLorean Series.On March 15, 2009 heading to Ruidoso, NM, I was driving highway 285, just north of Pecos, Texas. The New Mexico border was not far to my north and the Pecos River was to my east.
I had just driven all day from Houston and across Texas so I was tired. The sun had set and the horizon glowed orange and red. Silhouetted in the sunset was the profile of the Guadalupe Mountains. I could see the sheer face of El Capitan. Next to it was the Guadalupe Peak, the highest peak in Texas. Between me and this mountain range, was 70 miles of cold, dark desert. Also silhouetted against the orange sky were the spiky shapes of yucca plants.
I tried to capture that image in this painting as best I could.
Painted on a 16 by 20 inch canvas with acrylics.

hmmm weird... I've never been to tx except for a stop over at the airport. I think it would be fun to drive the southwest from TX to CA though.

It is an interesting state. The East side is covered with thick pine forest. The central part has limestone hills, oak trees and clear water. The west is desert and Mountains. The panhandle is flat plains and canyons. And then there is the coast.
Even then, there are micro-ecosystems, like the lost pines near Austin, or the lost maples in the Hill Country. In the west mountains there are alpine forest high above the desert.

I went to southern California in 1980. It is a beautiful state.
I find the desert Southwest fascinating. The lower elevations are desert, but up in the mountains are forest.
