Description OH NOES MORE DRAGONS.
And by more I mean... The second I've ever posted to this account. Ridley doesn't count.

So APPARENTLY, a long time ago, I had created some sort of spirit/insect/desert dragon thing and named it Kinshase. It looked nothing like this, of course. It was a lot crappier.

AND OH LOOK, HERE IT IS: [link]

But I liked the idea and did some crap and totally changed the critter around and now he's not just a spirit/insect/desert dragon thing, he's a CENTAUR/spirit/insect/desert dragon thing. With holes like a Tyranitar. Lot's of holes. And bug legs.

I like bugs.

AND THAT'S THE STORY.

Yes, I was incredibly drawn in by that spectacular chest piece you've got going on in here. The darks coming out of there from behind the chest forms, just killer. Your contrast in this all around is just sick. Good work, and very fun design. I'm just having a wonderful time looking at the angles and dark values in this. Love it!

This looks like a really unique take on the whole dragon concept. I see a lot of dragons on the site but the mix of different creatures here is interesting. It seems very skeletal in the overall design. I suspect that is the insect influence. I like the legs a lot.

I like the sepia/burnout look with the rougher pencil sketch. It gives it a cool aged appearance. You have some good gradation in the shading. You have distinctive darks, highlights and mid-tones.

It would be nice to see what else you can do with this design. I feel there could have been more detail in the wings and head/upper portion of the neck. These areas appear to have less of the armored/plating look as the rest of the body. The angle or curve of the neck seems a bit off to me, as well.

Delta-Hexagon In reply to hybridinsurgency [2010-12-21 18:31:54 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually kind of iffy with the sepia tones paper background, myself. It was a last minute addition, you know? I've seen other people pull it off so I wanted to give it a go, too. It doesn't detract from the actual image, then? It's not too much? I'm just crazy and it looks fine?

I'm also glad you like the shading. It was an experiment in a technique I've never done before. A looser sort of messier technique I saw in one of my art books. I'm glad it seems to have paid off well. I'm still learning when it comes to digital colouring. Or, shading. Seeing as I fail at colouring.

Ah, thanks for pointing out the neck, I hadn't noticed. Now that you mention it it is a bit skewed, comes out of the chest at an awkward sort of angle. That's pen for you. Almost impossible to fix up after a mistake has been made. But I'll be double sure to fix up the chest/neck area next time I attempt this guy.

Thank you!

I don't think the sepia distracts too much but if it isn't your thing that's cool. The drawing itself still looks good.

And, yeah, I get the unforgiving nature of pen!

Awesome.
Yeah, all my stuff starts out as a pen sketch and goes from there. It's unforgiving, for sure, but it still remains my favourite medium. The fact that mistakes are unfixable triggers something in my brain that compels be to draw better or something.

Valid point. I might have a sketch dump over christmas break to reveal all the crap I've been drawing.

Delta-Hexagon In reply to Mird-the-Clever [2010-12-21 05:33:43 +0000 UTC]

You should. Most of the time the sketches are far better than the finished product, if only because more freedom was expressed while drawing them.
