They would probably have enough tales to tell that'd last us a life time.

I'm sure they would. I would love to know the background of all of these places.

Some of them are pretty dark though... ... But that's just what makes them worth finding out...

Why does't anyone find this topic interesting?!!! They all run away just as soon as they hear the stairs creak...

I have no idea. To me it just adds to the excitement of the experience! You can let your mind run wild, get your adrenaline going.

Still, I guess the walls don't really want to say anything to us... Too bad. ;6

Probably: By the age of 50, the neighbours' child came by and scraped off some paint off me yet nobody noticed. LOL..

The amount of paint peeling off of the doors and walls is enough to give me goosebumps! And that is what makes this picture interesting!

Dammit. Wish I was there. I'd nab that fire alarm pullbox, and that Prescolite exit sign. [cry]

tsk tsk tsk!! "Take only photos, leave only footprints". Though it is tempting to take some of the more interesting stuff from there..

That phrase is all a bunch of bullshit. Only applies to buildings that are still in use. That does not apply to abandoned buildings that are structurally unsound and will collapse during the next blizzard.

As soon as that building:
1.) collapses,
2.) gets cleaned out and demolished by the wrecking ball so the land can be sold, or
3.) gangsters and vandals wreck it and have their fun smashing everything that can be broken

it will all be destroyed and end up in the landfill anyways.

Better to clean it out and save it, then to let it be gone forever. 98% of society sees it as garbage, and you can't get arrested for cleaning up "garbage".

PS: That sign is a Prescolite from the late 1990's. I have one, but in green: [link]

That's just my personal philosophy. I don't agree with taking things from buildings or destroying buildings. I have just always explored with that philosophy; especially since majority of the buildings are owned by an individual, or the city. If I was caught by the police, they could easily charge me with burglary if they felt like it.
That's pretty neat. You seem to know a lot about them. Do you collect them?

SeberHusky In reply to dementeddiva23 [2012-09-17 23:27:16 +0000 UTC]

It's a misdemeanor, and likely wont charge you if the cop is in a good mood. If the item stoled is under a certain amount (usually $500 to $1,000), it is a misdemeanor and you can not go to jail for it.

And yes, yes I do. I have about 70 total, and two of which I bought on eBay from people who saved them from buildings.

I've got a whole big gallery here: [link]

Those art-deco ones from the 30's, 40's and 50's, with the streamlined styles and retro look, people will shell out $100 - $250 for them, no matter what the condition! ([link] )

Oh wow! That's pretty cool. What sparked your interest in them? that's a lot of money for them! I never really thought about them as anything other than an exit sign. I never really thought about the monetary value or intrinsic value. Very cool.

SeberHusky In reply to dementeddiva23 [2012-09-18 00:36:14 +0000 UTC]

Me neither. I just developed a liking to them, and it went from there.

There is no defined price for these signs, it's just whatever the person is selling them for. The usual prices are anywhere from $5 to $50 for working new, new in box, or vintage and used signs. It's only the certain special ones that go over the hundreds. There's also special explosion-proof signs that are bolted up like a battleship, for use in chemical factories and other high-risk areas. Those ones cost as much as $1,500 to $2,300! Obviously, those are way out of my price range. I buy whatever ones are cheap or if they are interesting enough. I clean them up, and inspect and re-wire them if needed. Then I put a regular lamp cord on them, and they light up once again.

That's pretty neat. It's a very interesting hobby, for sure.
That's amazing they can go for that high!! I never really thought of them as anything more than just a lit sign; never really giving it any monetary value. Very cool. Do you use them in your house, or do you just keep them stored away for safe keeping?

SeberHusky In reply to dementeddiva23 [2012-09-28 22:52:24 +0000 UTC]

I have two that are in use daily. One is an LED exit sign, as they use less energy, and the other is a spotlight so that when the power goes out, I can still see without needing a flashlight. The other 70-something I have are stored on a bookshelf in my basement.

That is pretty cool! You definitely have a lot of them. And you can't beat having a sign that will provide light if the power goes out! Very impressive collection!
