End of update.

I started on these owls a couple of months ago after I had raided my local fabric store and discovered two new colors in their modest selection of faux fur (which prior to this addition consisted of three colors...). Once home I got started on twelve owls but got interupted soon after so they've been lying around unfinished ever since.

Realizing that my mother in law's birthday was just two days away and I was still missing a birthday gift for her, I decided to finish up the four owls that were closest to completion and let her pick one. She picked the white owl with a green belly. Oh, and these guys introduce a new size as they are smaller than the original three owls I made close to a year ago. :3

I'm hoping to finish the rest soon, as well as a certain horse plush I've been devoting much of my time to over the recent weeks. In the mean time I wish you a happy Easter!

Materials: Faux fur, faux suede, safety eyes and styrofoam beads

Thank you. They come in many sizes these days. The largest on this picture is about 30 cm tall and the small ones are about half that size. My tiniest owls are about 5 cm tall. :3

Just 5 cm? So tiny! Must be difficult to sew.Β

The beak is the most challenging area with the smaller sizes. :3
I found a few pictures that show groups of varying sizes. The first picture has sizes ranging from Really tiny to small, and the second picture shows Xsmall to large. :3

You have some amazingΒ plushing skillsΒ and awesome designs. At first I thought you only do owl plushies but I've just seen you've made some other animals as well. Where do you get all this nice fabric?

Thank you. I've been building my fabric stock over many years now. The fabrics used in this picture, along with my velour, suede and most of my minky fabric are all from local stores here in Denmark. Faux fur is hard to come by. There are some, but they tend to be expensive and if a store has any at all, then only few. The blue faux fur (seen in the picture) is from overseas (fabric.com). Later I found a webstore situated in Germany with web fronts in many european countries (stoffe.de). I got some really nice furs from there, but they changed the minimum order size to three meters per faux fur, so that's a no go for me. Last year I found a webstore situated in the UK. It has tons of nice furs and the prices are fairly low compared to danish standards, so I've bought a lot there (mohairbearmakingsupplies.co.uk). The quality of the fabrics from there vary, but most have been very high. *_* Hmm... I think that covers most of it. Two furs I bought second hand, after a friend gave me a tip about a swedish add in a facebook crafting group.

That's great. Have you ever had a case that the color of some ordered fabric would be much different from the photo from the web store?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

demiveemon In reply to oollioo [2018-01-25 19:16:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes. The blue fabric from overseas (it's closer to teal actually, but it depends on the light). Back in the day I wrote a long rant about it. xD For the longest time it was the highest quality fur in my possession though and it works really well with my owls. For many years I wouldn't order any fabrics from the web, but as there were never any new furs in the local stores, I grew desperate and had to give it a try again. I'll never order from outside the EU again. (I really hope that Brexit wont mean import fees when I order from my favorite store in the future T_T ) Lets see if I can find the rant...

Β  An expensive piece of fabric.I spotted the most lovely faux fur fabric on www.fabric.com some weeks ago and decided to buy some, eventhough the shippingcost would end up close to the same amount the fabric itself would cost. About a week ago, the package arrived and I was very excited. The picture had shown a lovely dark grey fur with a shimmer of blue - Perfect for a rabbit plush or maybe a cat. Ofcourse I knew, that colors on a photo can't always be trusted, but I didn't quiet expect it to be all blue. Unfortunate for me, I don't know any blue animals...
Anyways... I decided to keep the fabric, because I figured that sending it back would probably result in more costs.
Today, I recieved a letter from UPS (the shipping service). They noted me about additional import taxes that need to be paid. But it doesn't end here.... For their trouble they want me to pay them three times that amount. To make matters even more unfair, they only provide me 8 days to pay or they'll add another $14.30, because I didn't pay in tim

Hah I see, but I can totally understand your frustrations. The same thing happened to my friend a few years ago. I think she wrote a lot of negative feedback to that webstore (which I forgot the name) afterwards. Not sure if they cared though.Β

Hm, yeah. Ordering fabrics you haven't actually seen or felt is always a gamble. Fabric.com doesn't seem to be very well liked in the plush artist group I'm following on facebook. I still think they have nice stuff and if you live in the US, the shipping is for free, they offer swatches and they have decent return policies. But it's hard to judge a huge fabric store based on a single fabric. The color was off from the photo, yes, but it's extremly difficult to photograph fabric and get accurate colors. The overall quality of the fur though- Oh my gosh, it's so soft and has a lovely luster and wee white hairs mixed into the blue. I dread the day that I run out of it. I've come to love that expensive piece of fur. x3

*ponders* Yeah, my owls are probably the most squishy of my designs and I can go wild with my fur fabrics on them. *_* Some of the new furs from that brittish store equal the blue fur when it comes to luster and softness. On the other hand, some of my lowest quality furs come from the same store. %D

demiveemon In reply to oollioo [2018-01-25 21:08:54 +0000 UTC]

The owl's were very straight forward. A friend of mine wanted me to make an owl plush based on one that can be seen in the movie Lost in translation. Back then I was very limited when it came to fabrics. I had three colors of fake fur - brown, white and black. xD I used the brown for the large owl and I remember going to the toystore and buying a plush dog there that I gutted for the belly fabric. ^^,
The protorype was a little owl I made with felt, and after that it was just a matter of scaling. You can see the protorypein these two pictures.

Hm, there are many XD One of my favorites is called "The good news". It resounds with my whole being for some reason. Might not be the best introduction though... Maybe just start out with the main theme? Prologue and Aloy's theme are the first two tracks of the album. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SNQGy…

The album has 4 discs all in all. The first one is probably the most enjoyable, as the later tracks have a lot more bgm, where as the first disc has the music that plays during story progression.

I know NFS but I have to say I didn't play it for the last few years. There is this fun racing toony game that you can play on the phone as well, I think it's called Beach buggie or something. I still ply it from time to time and it's fun.

As far as I'm concerned, the couple of titles that came afterwards took a nosedive and I got tired of spending money on them, only to never play them properly. xD Another game I played many years ago was Beyond good and evil. It had some races in it where you had to drive a hoover craft across water and dodge lasers and stuff, while chasing after some fleeing villains. Oh, how I loved that! XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

demiveemon In reply to decay125 [2016-01-09 18:50:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's amounted to quiet a few owls over the past years. It all started with the large brown owl in the photo. A friend of mine commissioned it. She wanted it to look similar to an owl plush briefly seen in the movie "Lost in translation". Back then I didn't have any fabrics with long pile, not like the ones I use these days for my fluffy owls. I only had white, brown and black. If I remember correctly, I even went to the supermarket and bought a large dog plush, which I then had to slaughter for the fabric used on the belly. %D
Anyways, I didn't think that such a short fur suited such a large owl, so after finishing it I've been downsizing the pattern a couple of times. Also, whenever I've stumbled across any furry fabric I've bought some and then I wanted to try out what kind of combinations I could come up with, with the limited colors I had available.
Another reason for making so many of these owls, is because owls are popular, so they have a good chance of selling, and the pattern ist the most easy and straight forward of all my patterns. So that's why it's ended up being so many owls, and it started with a commission. :3
