Small swimming invertebrates and floating plant matter, mostly. The larger ones will have a go at snatching baby bellrays, though.

How much does plankton come into play? I couldn't help thinking of them as solution to why the water in your ocean could possibly be red (other than, you know, chemicals, etc.)

yeah the oceans are red because of the red plants (forests and floating algae).
