Description When George Lucas began making his third installment in the Star Wars saga, he wanted what might be his final film in the series to be darker and more mature. Thus the original working title "Revenge of the Jedi" and the planned pg-13 rating.

Having a pg-13 rating allowed Lucas to inject more violence, foul language, and most importunately sex, into his screen play. The first two Star Wars films had been oft criticized for their sexless atmosphere and lack of female characters. Besides Princess Leia, none of the sparse female characters even had names.

Lucas decided to change this narrative in Revenge, using the freedom allowed by the pg-13 rating and the backdrop of the crime lord Jabba the Hutt's palace to create a den of debauchery and depravity. This would include giving the newly re-designed slug lord a harem of beautiful slave girls.

While his design team began to work on creating the diverse and abundant inhabitant of the Hutt's desert palace, Lucas made the somewhat controversial choice to have Leia be captured, added to this harem, and be chained to Jabba's gargantuan throne.

To set the stage for Leia's eventual new position, Lucas tasked one of his concept artist,  Nilo Rodis Janero, to create an alien girl who would be leashed to Jabba when the criminal was introduced. Lucas made only a few stipulation to the designer that this new slave be a dancer (so she could perform during the music number he planned) and also completely naked since he wanted nudity in Revenge but knew he would be limited on how clothing-deprived he could make Carrie Fisher.

Thus the first designs of Oola were born. Originally called "Bird Lady" she was designed as a feathered, dark-skinned female, with purple sparkles covering her otherwise naked body. Lucas was not completely happy with this and inspired by Star Treks Orion slave girls, requested that she be made green.

Janero made her green and to make her distinctive he added tentacles, a headdress, and a gag. He then gave her the new working name of "Oola".

While different possibilities for her character were thrown around, including her escaping with Leia and joining the rebellion, it was ultimately decided she would fall victim to the beast in Jabba's palace. Oola would dance to the music of Jabba's band, be pulled onto his dais where she would refuse his "kiss", and then on her return to the dance floor, be dropped into the pit. This would showcase the Hutt's cruelty and set the stage for Luke's eventual battle with the monster.

While eventually Lucas would change "Revenge" to "Return" and recant much of the mature content, including giving Oola a costume and removing her gag, some nudity would make it's way into the film in the dancer's now infamous nip-slip during her struggle with her master. This wardrobe malfunction has survived the many iterations and special edition leaving many to wonder if Lucas intended to eave it there as an homage to his original plans for the film.

Here's a link to what the concept art looked like during the pre-production of Revenge of the Jedi. I, of course, did a little modification... diythegalaxyofstarwars.files.w…

Would have liked to have seen Oola live and join the Rebels.

I remember seeing the concept drawings in the RotJ art book years ago. The headpiece/gag is such a nifty design, and together with her being nude it would have made jabba's palace an even darker and more disturbing setting. And surely would have created an even more lasting impression in those that saw it! Great to see that original concept so nicely realized here.

As interesting as the PG-13 version may have been, Return in already the most controversial of the original trilogy, not to mention, I think Oola's popularity came from being sexy enough, without being too overt (nipple slip not included). The franchise may have gone in a completely different direction had Revenge been the movie that we got.

Man... now I want to see this version of Return of the Jedi.
The version of Oola we got was nice, but... damn, it makes me wish this happened.

The second draft before the introduction of Oola had a male starship captain making demands before being thrown into the pit.  Imagine the repercussions of not having the lovely Oola except as a background dancer that danced along with the other women on set.  Richard Marquand decided to push for Oola as a major plot point of foreshadowing Leia’s enslavement.  The unseen director’s cut would have been having Oola escaping, getting captured, and then having her dance and struggle against Jabba, and eaten by the Rancor.  I surmise these extra scenes would have been while the droids were walking to the palace, which took an entire day, and C3PO saying if I told you  half the things I’ve heard about Jabba the Hutt, you’d probably short circuit.

I've never heard about the unseen directors cut, but I do remember reading that second draft. I'm super glad they changed that.

I talked to Femi Taylor about unfilmed scenes, specifically Oola escaping.  She mentioned in a magazine interview that the director had storyboarded her escaping before meeting her untimely end.  It does seem to fit with Jabba's impatience with her, Oola's net outfit that I surmise came from the net that caught her, and Oola's melancholy state.  Assuming they used the original concept, Oola would be half naked as she tried to escape in the desert.  She gets caught using a net.  Taken before the Hutt, she is punished severely and dressed in the net with leather straps, and forced to sit next to the Hutt for her future confrontation and disposal by the Hutt.  What a scene that would be.

Nilo Rodis Janero came up with the modified design.  Phil Tippett made the design.   Note how her makeup is like Marta the Orion slave

Thanks for that. Do you mean that it was Tippet then who made the Bird Lady design and then Janero modified it to the green slave?

Richard Marquand is the one who suggested a bird lady, simply adding feathers with purple body paint.  George Lucas reviewed and asked for the character to be green and more alien.
