Description The iconic lion (Panthera leo) is the world’s most social felid species, forming groups called prides. These typically contain a few adult males, lionesses, and juveniles of various ages. Lions are scattered thoughout sub-Saharan Africa and have one remaining population in northwest India, though formerly they also occurred in southeastern Europe and throughout southwestern Asia. A cat of open country, their preferred habitats are plains and savannas, though they may also range into deserts and lightly wooded areas. Big-game hunters, favored prey of lions includes zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, gemsbok, and even giraffe. Larger animals are usually hunted in prides. As an apex predator, no animal preys on adults, but unguarded cubs may fall victim to leopards, hyenas, African wild dogs, and of course rival lions. But of course, the greatest threat comes from humanity. The lion is listed as Vulnerable to extinction, and around 20,000 are thought to remain in the wild. Conflict with herders, poaching, and habitat loss pose the biggest dangers to the species.
