I think it's quite the strange lighting effects that pull this image from ordinary. The dark and dark shaded glasses contrast greatly with the skin tones and pocket of illluminated background over the left shoulder. I get a very mysterious mood out of it because you can only half see the light smirk covered by the darkness.
