Description A pair of steampunk wings I made. The clockwork works properly, you can see a video of it working here: [link]

EDIT: I've been asked countless times how to make these, so I'm going to give a quick explanation here. The wings are made of thin card, covered in silver metallic vinyl sheeting, which I got from a general DIY store. As this is what most of the questions are about I'm going to find out exactly what it is when I get home from uni (around July sometime).

The clockwork is straight out of a clock with a few minimal adjustments to make the cogs rotate more (I found that when the alarm goes off more of the cogs rotate, and that there was a small part limiting how long the alarm would go off for; once I removed that part, it would go pretty much indefinitely). I can't give much more help on that though since finding that was pretty much trial, improvement and luck.

The rest is fairly straightforward - there's a cardboard sheet attached to the back of the clockwork to stop it digging into the wearer's back and to keep the clockwork going, and fake leather straps attached to that, which are adjustable with a buckle. I was lucky with the clock that I found in that it had places to attach the wings and cardboard (the metal bits on the corners of the clockwork) which were used to attach it to the original clock case. I then used the screws that came with it, and a few of my own, to attach the wings (as well as a bit of glue).

Lastly, the decorations on the wings are silver brads which are glued on, the wire along the top is some soldering wire glued in some nuts and glued onto the wings.

If anyone has any other questions feel free to ask, though I've pretty much covered everything here

EDIT AGAIN: I've made a tutorial! Hopefully any questions will be answered here .

Go ahead! Did you see the tutorial for these? It might help [link]

If you use a very similar design it would be nice if you could credit me, but if they end up really different don't worry. Let me know when they're done if you upload any pictures, I'd love to see them!

Thanks! I've considered selling them, they would probably be over £100 (mostly for materials and shipping), but I don't have any on sale at the moment. If I do put any on sale, I'll let you know!

Do you think you would ever compile one of these together for etsy? This thing is one of the most intricately detailed contraptions i have ever seen. Great work

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DemoraFairy In reply to CorruptJelly [2011-10-07 09:15:37 +0000 UTC]

I could, and I have considered it before, I'd just have to figure out a very secure way of packaging it, as the wings could get easily damaged if the box is placed on its side and I don't think just newspaper or bubble wrap would be enough. I have had others ask if these are for sale though, so maybe if I can find a good way of packaging it I could start making them to sell.

Out of interest, if you were to buy one of these, how much would you pay for it? lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CorruptJelly In reply to DemoraFairy [2011-10-07 15:16:11 +0000 UTC]

I see. Perhaps you could get a large block of syrophome and cut the shape of the wings into it?
Or maybe you could find a way to easily attach/detach the wings and inlude instructions for the potential buyer to attach them?
I honestly couldn't say how much i would pay for one of these, its tricky because it looks like somthing that could be easily sold for well over $150+ but at the same time a person like ME finds it very hard to spend $20 dollars on a t-shirt let alone an accessory. I think it would be better to ask someone who is more into the steampunk cosplay kindof scene.. (also a girl, you dont often see many men running around with mechanical angel wings on their back, lol)

DemoraFairy In reply to CorruptJelly [2011-10-07 16:42:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, could try that. I looked into custom polystyrene packaging but you have to get quotes. I could try getting sheets of polystyrene/styrofoam and sticking them together in a block. Either way I'd have to wait until I got home for Christmas to try any of this out.
Detachable wings, I like that. Would also make it easier to take to cons and stuff. I'll have a think about this, I think it should be easy enough.
I was thinking no more than £100, though P&P would probably be quite a lot. I've asked on Brass Goggles, haven't got any replies yet.

Thanks Hmm could be interesting posting patterns, considering I didn't really make any lol you can pretty much see what I did, the basic shape of the wing is there, and each of the 'feathers' is the same shape as the one on the top. There's leather straps attached to the back of the clockwork, which also has a sheet of cardboard attached to it (you can just see the bottom of it) to stop it digging into the wearer's back. If there's anything else you'd like me to explain feel free to ask

lol, I think it is a lot simpler than it looks I didn't actually use metal for the wings, it's cardboard covered in metallic vinyl.

DemoraFairy In reply to SkulduggeryGirl13 [2011-06-02 08:54:58 +0000 UTC]

Haha thanks I got it from a DIY store, though I'm afraid I can't remember exactly what the purpose of the vinyl is (or even if it is vinyl, for that matter), so I don't know how easy it'll be to get hold of. I think this [link] might be the closest I can find on the Internet, not sure though.

I think your equivalent would be The Home Depot or Lowe's, since it was definitely a DIY thing rather than a craft thing, though there's probably similar craft stuff out there.

What is the metallic sheeting made of? Vinyl? What department of a hardware store might it be found? (Electric, plumbing, gardening, etc)? Those wings are great!

DemoraFairy In reply to Emi801 [2011-05-06 11:07:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I can't remember exactly what it is and I'm at uni at the moment so can't check as it's at home. I got it from a general DIY store (B&Q, I think the US equivalent would be The Home Depot or Lowe's), which sells pretty much everything. I seem to remember it had something to do with windows, but I can't imagine what it would be. The closest I can find I think would be something like this [link] Sorry I can't be of any more help!

I think next time I go home I'm going to go back to B&Q and find out what it actually is, since I've been asked quite a few times...

Thanks They're made out of thin card, and covered in this metallic silver sheeting, which I'm afraid I can't for the life of me remember what it's called, but I got it from B&Q, so it's a hardware thing rather than a craft thing. Though similar craft stuff is probably available.

Ooh cool! Have you got a design yet? What sort of character are you going for? Have you started making it? Can't wait to see it One other piece of advice I would give is if you're looking for cogs and gears and such, don't bother buying them online, I found it much cheaper and quicker to buy old clocks from charity shops and car boot sales and things like that, then take them apart (just make sure they're clockwork and not battery powered first!). It also starts to give you an idea of how clockwork actually works.

Also, what con are you going to?

TinyFoot In reply to DemoraFairy [2011-03-22 17:44:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think I'm going for a flying delivery girl But I can't decide what kind of wings to make, I'm choosing between ones that look like butterfly wings, or more normal-looking ones...but both with a jet pack ^^ Awesome, I was planning on maybe making the cogs out of foam, seeing as I really only need them for decoration...except I can't seem to find any craft foam anywhere ^^'
I'm hoping to get it done for the MCM expo in October 8D
Thanks for your help~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DemoraFairy In reply to TinyFoot [2011-03-22 20:14:00 +0000 UTC]

That's really cool! And a jet pack sounds awesome. For the cogs, I'd probably just use real ones, much easier, and they look much better. Unless you're planning on making over-sized ones or anything like that. I was going to put clockwork on the wings themselves, and was going to try to make them out of foam, but it was too hard so I gave up in the end.

Ooh I'll be there, I'll keep an eye out for you! I don't know what I'll be cosplaying at the October one, but I know what I'm doing for the one coming in May (I'm doing the courtesan from Assassin's Creed Brotherhood). Are you going in May?

Real cogs, right (y) I dunt know if I'm going in May...I keep saying yes and then no, it really depends on what happens closer to the time~ But, I'll definately look for you if I do go in the end
Thanks for all your help, I'll keep you posted when I finish it :3
