Description ADHD

For mum

I’m sorry I hit you
and said mean words
I truly regret it
it really hurts.

I’ll stop disconnecting
from the outside world
and start concentrating
on what I should have heard.

I’ll sit still and quiet
on top of my chair
stop irritating and pulling
my sister’s hair.

I’m sorry I hurt you
I love you so much
but the ADHD
makes it hard to show such.

Please forgive me
for what I’ve done
I’ll be a much better
and greater son.

Many people today are diagnosed with the chronic disorder, ADHD (Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder). In fact I think that we are not aware of how many children and youth who are suffering from this at school. Teachers are lectured about problems like dyslexia in order to know how to help with and organize the child’s problems. However, there are not many teachers who are aware of the symptoms for ADHD. The teachers start blaming the children for being stupid and too hyperactive, which causes problems for the child’s learning ability. What not many know is that often people with ADHD are smarter than others. They see and perceive things other people do not.

I’m diagnosed with this illness. It took me six long years to get the diagnosis. It was six hard years with a lot of crying. My mother, father and I fought and fought in order to obtain the proof on a piece of paper. We fought hard and in the end, I almost gave up. But I got there. They blamed my mother and father for abusing me. They wanted to force me into saying that my parents beat me, which is NOT true! I think one of the many reasons why they hate us, is because they don’t like the church we’re a part of.

In other countries it takes one week to get this diagnosis, but the people here are different. In the end we ended up finding a man in our capital that seemed to understand the problems I’m dealing with. Although it was a long way to drive and a lot of money to pay, we were willing to try it out. He was our last hope. It turned out that it took him one day to verify my diagnosis. One day. After six years of driving back and forward to the city next by. So many hours I’d lost for nothing. But finally this one man where able to help me. I want to thank my mother and father for not stopping fighting all those years. Even though they got blamed for things they’d never even done, they still kept on fighting for my sake. Finally I was able to get the medicines I needed in order to live a rather normal life.

I hope nobody needs to suffer and wait for so many years as I did. Even though they tell you to shut up, don’t. Fight for the help you need. And remember that Jesus loves you no matter what kind of problems you’re dealing with.

In the drawing I drew a boy and in the poem this person is a boy, but in real life I’m a girl, in case you were wondering.

Sorry for writing so much... xD

I'm ADHD, and Christian too. Hi.

I can't believe people are treating you this way. They can't judge you for who you are, unless they have been through the same thing, which they obviously did not.

I see my mental disability as a gift more than a curse, actually. ADHD enhances my creativity, allows me to bring full attention to my passions. Of course, that means I don't do well in school, or concentrate on my studies. rofl: Still, it is God's gift. ADHD makes my world more interesting and colourful than any other ordinary person's life. When you have a mental disability, you always have to look on the bright side of things. That's because it's a gift, not a curse. It's a special part of who you are.

This is a great picture you did, by the way. I like the colouring.

Oh, well hello there! Nice to meet ya!

That is very true. I also like to view my diagnosis as a gift from God. I believe he gave me these challenges because he knew I'd be able to overcome them somehow. We all get different challenges and obstacles in our lives, but God would never give us something he knew we wouldn't be able to handle. And yes, our ADHD gives us lots of creativity, and often people who have it are much smarter than others. I also believe it gives us a chance to understand people with similar problems better. In fact I am very grateful to God for giving me this mental disability, as it is simply a part of me and who I am.

I am happy to hear that you also view it this way!

Thank you very much Fredd! I really appreciate your lovely and encouraging comment!

Very well done. An interesting blend of alternative, yet complimenting, colors placed in unexpected spots. Makes it really look full of emotion.

PS: ADHD child here too.

It's funny. Where you are from, it seems to take forever? Where I am from, they slap the ADHD label on any child, just because. Many of them don't have it, yet get medications for it (that they don't need). From one extreme, to the other.

I thought it was Percy at first then I read the description (like usual). Though recently my mom said I have ADD not ADHD because ADHD is mostly fake and they give medicine just for money while you don't need it at all. But I love how you're parents were trying to what was best for you, moving around and such.

Peacock17512 [2014-06-24 03:40:49 +0000 UTC]

A couple years ago (I believe I was in the 5th or 6th)I made this analogy to explain what its like to be ADD (and now my mom uses it all the time…)…:

"Your brain is like a corporate office building; everyone is in their cubicles doing their own thing, and everything is running smoothly. A new task comes in that needs to be done now, but whatever the other thing(s) was also needs to be done. Everyone on that floor of the building get confused and turned around about what needs to be done. Remember this is only one floor of the building, this is happening on a grand scale, multiple times, all at once, .

Then the fire alarm goes off, and everyone just gets more confused and jumbled up. They knowwhat they need to do, just not in what order and how. Some just bolt out of the building, while other need to finish that. one. last. thing. before they can go, which snowballs into everything. And then in the middle of it all it turns out that it was a false alarm, but some people are out of the build, others are probably halfway around the world by now, while the others are still frantically working, being even more confused by the people trying to get them to move it.

This is what its like to just be given a few simple tasks”

Now throw giftedness (which complicates everything) and a severe anxiety disorder most likely stemmed from lifethreatening food allergies on top of that. Fun.

Peacock17512 In reply to fungirl2001 [2014-09-13 18:46:52 +0000 UTC]

Ok, I figured that, considering its quite common. I'm just tree nuts, I'm good with peanuts. The most difficult thing in the world is trying to explain to people that peanuts do NOT grow on trees, they are a legume, similar to beans. They are essentially hard beans.

My one  sparkly red nail on my left ring finger that I painted in history yesterday is very distracting when I'm typing.

Brain disorders are hard to define, because there is a range for everything. It's not like a flu virus that invades your body, it's a way that your brain is which makes it hard for you to function.
There is no single anwser. Sometimes, medication can make problems worse. Sometimes, they help. I need my meds to function.
It's different for every person.

You know, when I read that poem I thought it was something you found on the internet or in a school book or something, but then I saw the bottom of your message that both the art and poem is by you. THAT IS A DAMN GOOD POEM! You know what you should do? since it sadly is so few that read the artists comments, and especially because its a long comment, you should post this one more time as a text. whether you use that dA text thing where you also could use your drawing here as the icon (if you know what I mean), or if you make something in photoshop. I've seen alot of text art pieces where they uses black backgrounds and white text, and some chosen words in red. I think maybe that would fit very well with this poem. And you really got a story to tell here, made me shed a tear even though I knew most of it already!
You really are a talented artist AND a writer, yeah and not to forget story teller and story maker. You should become an author and illustrate your own books. you would really become successful, I can swear on it!!! I wish you and your family the best of luck! keep up the good work! Proud to have you as my friend! <3
