Description A Deertaur! I think I've decided to call her Alicia. She's running away from a fire that her boyfriend is trying to put out. She's looking behind her worried for him. Yes, that strange haze is smoke from the fire on the right hand side. I know it doesn’t really look like it. I'm actually VERY happy how this turned out so do me a big favor and tell me what you think, it would mean a lot to me!

This is such a cool idea. I like the idea of deer centaurs, because then the guys have antlers

I love her expression like she's lost. And her little shirt is cute too

And thank you! She does have a boyfriend, (with antlers ha ha! ) that's why she's looking behind her with a worried expression because she's scared for him fighting a fire. And thank you! ^^

Ok- I love this piece.

So I took a close look, and I REALLY like the fur texture you used (where did you get it btw?) It looks so... pettable, like in one of those children fur touch books XD

That anatomy of the girl and deer body are just beautiful! Her flowy hands, the hooves (I can almost hear the trotting), her collarbones, her hair, her ears, just everything <33333
The background is nice and I like it~

The smoke kinda scared me XD I want to cough. I hope her boyfriend is ok! (also, her facial expression just shows something like "Oh dear, I hope it doesn't spread!" )

Overall, it's a nice piece, and is soft on the eyes C: (odd description-oh well.) (also, it makes for a perfect icon!)

Desert-Poppy In reply to FoamyStar [2012-08-20 22:06:01 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thanks so much, this is my favorite piece in my gallery!

Wow, you must have had to look real close, as what's posted is not the full size of the drawing! What I did to make the fur was have the color, then add noise, then add motion blur, which got me a nice fur texture!

Thanks for noticing all the details on her anatomy! I liked her head and hands the best, followed by her body. It's hard to make deer hooves, as they have two toes as opposed to a horses' one. For the bg my favorite part was the tree and the water!

Lol, but does it look like smoke? It' hard to draw! >< I was planning on making a picture of her bf in the future. There you could see how he's doing! Yeah, she's actually more worried for her bf than if the fire spreads. Love can make you blind like that! XD But she does worry for the rest of plants and nature.

Maybe because there are no harsh lines and shading? Thanks for your lovely review! Yes it does! I love this icon! It shall be staying for quite a while! XD

FoamyStar In reply to Desert-Poppy [2012-08-27 17:42:16 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, I picked a good one then!

The fur is beautiful *O* I'll have to figure out how to do that in gimp or something, because it looks so pettable!

Haha, I've never drawn a deer, but the hooves look like fun things to draw. The water is so cool, it has like a rainbowish reflection... and I really like that~

It does look like smoke! The only think I could suggest about it is maybe use a transparent pen/airbrush tool, and make it less and more transparent in places.
You should make a picture of her boyfriend! I'd like to see what he looks like C: Aha yeah XD

Yeah, the shading and lines help a lot C: You're welcome! I hope you do keep your icon for a long time, it's very nice.

JesnCin [2012-03-31 15:16:23 +0000 UTC]

Impressive! That expression really shows the concern and uncertainty the character is going through.
Although I find the piece simple, it tells so much; at first I was thinking "wow a deertaur" then I saw the smoke and suddenly there's this whole message being conveyed. I might be reading into this, but bear with me I like how it conveys a message of maybe, the destruction of natural things through *maybe* human actions. Alicia's boyfriend is trying to put out the fire to save another, and that kind of altruistic nature is certainly not uncommon in nature. The way you added "human" features to the otherwise mythical creatures makes it easier for the audience to relate to them, and suddenly we understand what it's like to be an animal facing fire (human threat?).
Maybe it's 'cos the "deer" aspect reminds me of Bambi haha but anyway, great job! Very thought provoking piece.

Oh! Thank you so much for responding! Comments mean a lot to me!
Yeah, I'm surprised how easily I was able to convey her expression. And you know, I didn't really think much of how the fire got started and whatnot, though I think on a deeper level I did think about how it probably was humans who started it. Probably clearing land away or something for themselves.
I imagined Alicia to be thinking how even though her boyfriend said to find a safe place away from the fire, she still wants to head back and help him and make sure he's ok. She's paused mid-run even though the smoke is licking at her heels. Alicia is more worried about him then herself. I also was planning on doing a picture of her boyfriend trying to put out the fire.
I wanted to do something a little different is why I did a Deertaur. I wanted to have a go at the differences between horses and deer. But thank you for your kind comments! By the way, how did you find my picture?

You're welcome!
It's always so satisfying to end up with the desired expression down
Haha, I guess I got the Miyazaki vibes from this XD
Well you're interpretation fits with the altruistic behavior idea, which is interesting. I think the way you made her a deertaur rather than a horse makes it easier to get the theme of the piece.

Ah, to be completely honest, I saw a comment you posted on one of *Seraphi91 's polls. You mentioned how much you liked comments and how you've given as many as you can to others. I felt as though I could relate, and so- one comment-giver to another, I thought I'd drop by your gallery and check out your stuff

Desert-Poppy In reply to JesnCin [2012-04-02 20:28:17 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha! Yes it is! No drawing and re-drawing it!

Yes! Miyazaki always does seem to imply ever so slightly the way humans are messing up nature! I just recently watched Spirited Away cuz I haven't seen it in a long time, and when the River Spirit with all that junk inside...yup. Subtle reference!

Mmm, yeah, maybe because deer's are more delicate looking than horses huh? Horses are sturdier.

Wow really? That was really awesome of you! There should be a group or something where you give a comment and receive a comment, like that give and get a llama thing. Yeah, I mean, I have some art in my gallery that a lot of people fav, but I'd like to know WHY they like it. And even if they didn't I'd still like to know why. Maybe or maybe not I would consider that person's comments and change my art for next time or not. DA should also have what they have on youtube, the likes and dislikes part of it, but say WHY. It's no good if you just click a button and go on your merry way. You can never improve as an artist if no one tells you the specifics. Not only do I comment on art I like, I try to be helpful so the artist can put it in consideration for next time. Like, That cloud is too near the persons head and looks like it's coming out of it, or something like that. Ha ha, sorry if I rambled!

But thank you for taking the time to chat with me and comment about my work! ^^

It's a revisited theme in his works

I guess deer are associated with forests better.

It's what I do! I think there is a group that features a list of people who offer feedback and critiques #GetWatchers . I'm not a member of the group, but it's worth taking a look. You'd be surprised at how many connections you can establish by leaving people a lot of developed comments!
That's understandable, I probably wouldn't have made it to where I am now without the critiques and comments people have given me, so it's all very essential.
Keep giving really meaningful comments, and you may gain a valuable friend or two. It takes a while, but in the end you learn a thing or two yourself in the process.

You're welcome as always!

Desert-Poppy In reply to JesnCin [2012-04-07 03:00:39 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha, yeah it is. Not too subtle eh? He might as well bash us over the head with it! XD

Yeah, I've heard of that group before, but was unsure about it. There is no easy way to gain friendship. You have to work at it, and it's a give and take. You know? I just realized that the people who have the most watchers and commenters are those who draw fan things, like Naruto or Pokemon or something. Not always, but quite often. That kind of leaves us originals in the dust. It's kind of sad.

You're awesome! We should be friends!

JesnCin In reply to Desert-Poppy [2012-04-07 15:12:45 +0000 UTC]

Especially with a majority of his characters going "Stupid humans!" XD

Indeed! That's why I go around doing the commenting on my own.
People like familiarity, that's probably why some movies have so many sequels and reuse actors or whatever. It's the same with fanart I guess, it takes that tiny bit of extra attention to like or learn about something new and original (and apparently a lot of people can't afford that extra time). I had to get very strong connections with people for them to even know my characters' names So yeah, hard times. That often changes with artistic improvement.

Sure thing! I'll drop by when you post somethin'

Ha ha lol! Exactly! We need to take a lesson from ourselves!

That's a good idea, and a good thing to do!
Wow, you know I never thought of it that way, but it must be true. Also, friends and the media has control over that. If your friends or whatever tell you about this really neat show of course you are going to look into it too, and if it's popular then you will want to jump on the bandwagon. If people are interested in something, they will take the time to learn the character's name's and background. Lol, people remembering your characters names! XD I've had one of my stories in existence (not on the market however) since 2006, and do you think my brother remembers the characters names? Not very well! XD

Awesome! Thanks! I will do the same!

It takes a while to notice, but after some time you see a pattern. When appreciating artists around here, you need to put quality over subject often. The bandwagon thing can be great though, it helps us discover other amazing artists through a common interest, but an overdose of it can be bad. A lot of the artists I appreciate here I found through fan art, but I got to know and comment on their original work and even now I can't believe a lot of them are my friends XP
Haha so I guess I'm not the only one with the names problem! XD

Sweet <3 are you planning to post any soon?

Desert-Poppy In reply to JesnCin [2012-04-15 06:14:44 +0000 UTC]

That's right. Sometimes the "little people" the people who only have like, less than 5,000 views, have some great art in them, even if they aren't common things. That's pretty amazing, finding people by fan art, then knowing them even deeper! Some people might do fan art just to get views and watchers, but I only do fan art because I love it.
Nope. You're not. I'm all like, when he goofs up my characters!

Yeah, actually I am! Or hoping to lol! I haven't posted pictures for a long time, so I'm gonna go through my millions of pictures (no seriously I take to many!) and I might draw a (fan) comic. An idea popped in my head so I wanna draw it! Oh yeah! I got my flash cs3 working again (I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7) so I can't wait to animate more! How about you? I took a quick look through your gallery and it looks amazing. One word I would say about your art is "simplistic" but simple in a good way. Like, your simplicity draws out things people might not otherwise take notice in.

JesnCin In reply to Desert-Poppy [2012-04-16 12:41:17 +0000 UTC]

That's certainly sad to see. I always get a little upset seeing artists go unnoticed over audience bias >__< It's a great experience indeed! I like to take advantage of finding someone amazing and finding out about their more personal projects. Awwh yes, I know people like that! Fanart should be a form appreciation, not something exploited for attention.

Memorize their names or persih!

Ooh, a fan comic! Of what, if I may ask? It's great that you'll be making more art at least! How long does it usually take for you to make art?
Aaw, thanks a ton for taking a look at my gallery. It means a lot! I'm really flattered that you were able to catch the "simplicity" concept. Lately I've been trying to achieve more structured work instead of being over reliant on special effects XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Desert-Poppy In reply to JesnCin [2012-04-16 21:20:50 +0000 UTC]

I know right? And I 'm not sure there's something to do about it. Some people are just so obsessed with getting high views.

What? Is it that hard to memorize 52 names? Lol, jk, it's not that many. Although people do seem to memorize all the Pokemon. Aren't there over 400? I don't know, I've stopped counting a long while ago.

Of course you may ask, as it might take me a million years to actually draw the thing! lol! It's about Star Fox Adventures. Heard of it? It's a great game! This is the concept I was planning on doing it on this [link] start watching around 25 seconds to 45. Lol, you'll know what I mean! I was also planning on drawing a picture for a contest just for fun. ^^ Um, drawing pictures, depending on the quality can range from 30 seconds to about 30 minutes. Coloring the blasted thing might take a few days, as I'm not that good with computer coloring! That's why I was so happy with my Deertaur, how well it came out, and that actually only took 2 days!!!! How about you? How long does it take you?

Of course, it's beautiful artwork! Yay, I caught the "simplicity" lol! That's a good idea! Trying out different styles of art is wonderful! And there's nothing wrong with a lot of special effects! lol!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JesnCin In reply to Desert-Poppy [2012-04-17 12:15:16 +0000 UTC]

Yep Some just randomly fave just to get page-views X( not really sure what the point of that is. I mean high page-views don't make better art after all.

Haha, well Pokemon's been here for a really long time, and has some really die-hard fans XD I have absolutely no idea how many they've created by now!

I think I saw that game pop up in gaming channels every now and then Haha, plus that'd be an interesting scene to fan-comic-ify all right XD oh! Good luck with the contest then, either way just have a lot of fun with it!
Getting a picture done fast is a great feeling! I find it painstaking being stuck on a picture for too long. 30 seconds/minutes is a lot faster than how long I draw, I'll tell you that! XD I usually take um, 2 hours to draw something decent. Anything with backgrounds would take a couple of days, and if it's painted it may take months (hate thatttt)! Otherwise I draw pretty fast X)

!! Haha, there's definitely nothing wrong with special effects XD I just abused my power with it a little too much in the past

Desert-Poppy In reply to JesnCin [2012-05-06 07:08:30 +0000 UTC]

Hey there! Sorry it took me a while to respond! (Check out my journal for details.) Oh so what you mean is someone faves another person's artwork so that person becomes curious in who this person is, and goes to check out the gallery? Not cool.

Oh yeah good point! I'm not that much into the anime (when I was a kid the first few seasons were the best) but the games are better. I wouldn't call myself a die-hard fan, but I enjoy it as much as the next game. Actually, I don't think I even have a favorite company or whatever of games! Whether it may be Kirby, Star Fox, Zelda, Mario, Fire Emblem, etc. I enjoy them all. I have top favorite games, but not the actual company if you know what I mean.

Argh! I still haven't drawn it yet! I've posted a few pictures for contests, (seen them yet? You need to watch me *hint hint* JK! You don't have to if you don't want! ) but not that Star Fox one. Yes, it's quite tedious to draw the sucker, but you get a sense of relief and delight when you finish a drawing to your liking. 2 hours isn't that bad. I know it takes other people longer. Wow actual painting? I could never do that. I have for drawing classes, but I worry about messing up. Once you do, there is no ctrl Z! Lol!

Ah I see! Well, it's all in the process of learning!

Yep that's the kind of people I'm talking about X( Such a waste of time!

That makes sense, fandoms are supposed to be flexible and fun. They shouldn't be limited to certain companies and such

Ah, I'll see if I can get to commenting on those few
It's a tough battle with each piece, certainly worth the trouble in the end. Well, it's digital painting for now, but getting to the traditional tools is something I'm excited about (I just don't have the resources for that kind of stuff!). I still reach for the ctrl Z while sketching on paper, so I feel your pain D:

It just seems as if people have one select thing they really enjoy, whether it may be a game a sport or a tv show. I'm kind of all over the map; a bit strange!

Hey thanks! You need to post things up too! I really enjoy your artwork! I had to take traditional art classes myself. It was both fun and a pain in the neck at the same time. I remember we had to paint the color wheel and all of its tints and shades and other things. It had to be exact. Whew.

It's cool to like a lot of things! I tend to get obsessed over one thing to the point of unhealthiness XB
