Description This photomanipulation is a collection of some lilies I photographed this summer. The original layered file was 104 megabytes, making it the all-time winner for eating up HD space! After I merged the layers and resized it, it only takes up a mere 837.7 kilobytes. Anyway, it was lots of fun to do, and I hope you like it. Thanks go to Photoshop CS, without which this work would have been very difficult.

Thank you, Corina. I like to make these photo-manip's every so often. This year, I chose lilies because I have so many images.

Wow! Here is the 30 layer lily collage. It's beautiful. Somehow you've made each lily look painted, instead of like a photo. How did you do that?!!! It's cool. This is wonderful, and well worth the time you put into it. I am not at all disappointed!

Just to offer a bit of feedback on what is overall a splendid piece... I see what you mean about having a difficult time finding the right background. The lines of most of the flowers are very crisp, and you would need a soft textured, neutral background to contrast and show them off at their best. You did a good job choosing. And the purple frame, a surprising and original choice, definitely works and gives the entire piece a festive color-celebration feel.

I think the bottom front lily goes best with the background. Its petals have a soft, velveteen finish that works very well to enhance the 3D effect of the flower. Its petals have the most complex patterning on them, which also contributes to the 3D look. The other flowers are beautiful, too, but they have less nuance of color and shading, so they look a bit less 3D. For some gut-feeling reason that I can't substantiate, I keep thinking that blurring the outlines of the other flowers a bit would help with the 3D look, or adding a subtle, soft-grain finish similar to the bottom left lily to the flowers.

However, these are tiny, quibbling details, just to offer a bit of feedback. I really like this. Wish I had been able to watch over your shoulder while you did it and see how you handled the layers!!! I am up to four now, but I haven't started fiddling with the transparency yet. You have given me inspiration to try something like this one day -- not ready yet, but soon... probably after I try waterfalls.

Thanks for the excellent ideas, Val. I agree, if one really wants the 3D look, it's best to blur the edges of the flowers so as to create a depth of field. I relied strictly on the shadings that come with the drop shadow layer effects. Sometimes I use the bevel/emboss function, too, but I don't think I did with this one.

Glad you like my labor of love!

Thank you. It was a big file to work with (original image was 4000x2800 px, and my computer was barely coping with memory requirements. There were a few crashes and freezes before it was all over.

Thank you, THelma. Every now and then I get a bee in my bonnet to do one of the collages. They're just fun!

It reminds me of those hand made pictures, made up of lots of raised layers of paper? It'd be so much easier to explain if I knew the name

This is very pretty

Thank you. I guess you mean embossed paper? I got the shading effects from layers/blends/drop shadows. That filter really gives a 3D aspect.

Sort of but not really... My auntie makes these massive pictures of flower bouquets and things... Basically you start with a large cut out shape on coloured or decorative paper, or even with a picture on it. Then you glue a tiny bit of foam to raise the next layer, and you glue a slightly smaller coloured shape over the top, and repeat until you have a picture made up of all these layers of coloured paper, it's a really 3d effect... By the top layer it's raised quite high, so the frames always have to be really deep.

Its quite a traditional art form, I cant think of the name of it!

Thank you, Nance. I had loads of fun cut/pasting the flowers onto layers, but when it came time to fix the background and add a frame, I went crazy. I still don't love what I selected, but I just couldn't settle on anything! Glad you like this one. It was a work of love!

Thank you. It was lots of enjoyment, but I did get frustrated with the frame and background behind the flowers. I tried all kinds of textures and colors...didn't like any of them, really. Sometimes, I have a tendency to do "too much" and don't know when to call it quits. I think that might have been the case here.
